As always, finding that perfect weekend movie that will satisfy both a 5 and 9 year old (and hopefully the parents as well) is always a challenge for us. Generally, we have the usual problem that what one child will want to watch is not wanted by the other... or more likely, what one wants is going to be too young or old for the other. That is what you get when you have two children that are seperated by more than a year or so!
However, this past weekend was a bit of a breeze.. and we managed to find a movie that we ALL liked! Parents included... which is always a bit of a bonus!
Now, for some reason, my oldest child stumbled across Phineas and Ferb on Disney Plus during the summer. It is a relatively old cartoon from 2007... but it is really quite crazy and cute at the same time. The two boys (Phineas and Ferb) are child geniuses who end up going on crazy adventures with their friends... all unknown to their parents, who still think that they are just regular kids.
However, their older sister, Candace is always in on it... and she only wants to bust their secrecy and rat them out to their parents. Unfortunately for her, the evidence of adventure and genius all gets wiped away EVERY single time that she manages to get her parents to look. So, they just think that she is making stuff up!
Well, anything that manage to drag my oldest away from her Animal Crossing is quite something spectacular... and my oldest is still really in to cartoons instead of films and series with real people in it. I think that she gets that from me... I love my cartoons, comics and animated films! But I think that many of her friends are starting to move onto those stupid teen series/movies that are pumped out to market stuff... and are mostly about some sort of cool school life in the United States. The longer she keeps away from that stuff... the better!
So, my younger one has also started getting into the cartoon series as well... she is always getting quite excited by anything that her older sister gets into, so that isn't too much of a surprise. At least in this case, it is vaguely age-appropriate!
The previous week, whilst I was busy stressing out about completing assignments, the rest of the family managed to watch the first Phineas and Ferb film... I dropped in for the last few minutes and so I never really got into it. Trust me, it is really quite confusing when that is your first exposure to the world of Phineas and Ferb!
So, this week, the girls immediately jumped at the chance to have me watch together with the rest of the family, the second Phineas and Ferb movie (2020) which is subtitled, Candace against the Universe. The story, unsurprisingly enough, focusses on the problems of Candace, who is convinced that the entire Universe is conniving against her to stop her being able to foil the outlandish plans and adventures of her little brothers. Actually, all she wants is for her parents to realise that she is telling the truth...
The movie is full of catchy and really funny songs. Everything is fast paced and completely off the wall... and I was completely taken in by it all! My family said that the first movie was much better... but I was completely blown away by this one, so I'm going to watch the first one when I'm away on work later this month. Actually, I suspect that I'm going to start binge watching the whole cartoon series!
It is quite funny, my wife is reading and watching Anne of Green Gables with our oldest girl... meanwhile, I'm playing Dungeon Defenders and watching cartoons with her! Haha... quite different tastes, I guess she is sort of getting some well-rounded experiences and tastes. Oddly enough, she really is into both types of tastes! I really hope that lasts...
Anyway, back on point... Phineas and Ferb: Candace against the Universe. Highly recommended for young families, the kids will love it... the parents will love it. Hell, watch it even if you don't have kids!
