After spending days stuck around the low $60,000s, it suddenly exploded higher and moved above $71,000. In roughly 24 hours, Bitcoin gained close to 11%.
And honestly, the speed of the move is what caught my attention.
So what's behind it?
It's Not Just Bitcoin
The entire crypto market woke up.
Ethereum moved above $2,000, while several other major cryptocurrencies also jumped. More than $190 billion was added to the total crypto market value during the rally.
But there were a few things happening at the same time.
The U.S. Treasury announced increased buybacks of long-term government debt, helping push longer-term bond yields lower. Lower yields can make riskier assets like Bitcoin more attractive.
Then came the political side.
President Trump publicly pushed Congress to move forward with the stalled CLARITY Act, which could give the crypto industry a clearer regulatory framework. That helped improve sentiment around U.S. crypto policy.
And sometimes, sentiment is all a market needs.
Then Shorts Got Caught
There's another part of this move that I find really interesting.
A huge number of traders were betting Bitcoin would fall.
When Bitcoin suddenly moved higher, those short positions started getting liquidated.
More than $1 billion in short positions were reportedly liquidated within about an hour during Wednesday's surge.
And that can create a snowball effect.
Bitcoin rises.
Short sellers are forced to buy.
That buying pushes Bitcoin higher.
More shorts get liquidated.
Then even more buying follows.
Suddenly, a move that started normally becomes much bigger.
But Can Bitcoin Stay Above $70K?
That's the question I'm watching now.
A huge rally feels exciting.
But I've learned not to confuse a big green candle with a confirmed trend.
Bitcoin has just moved from the low $60Ks to above $70K incredibly quickly.
That's impressive.
But now buyers have to prove they can hold those gains.
If Bitcoin stays above $70K and builds support there, this rally could turn into something much bigger.
If it immediately falls back below the level, traders may start wondering whether the move was mostly short covering and excitement.
For now, I'm enjoying the move without getting carried away.
Bitcoin finally woke up.
Now we get to see whether this is the beginning of a real recovery—or just another explosive move that disappears as quickly as it arrived.
