Bitcoin Got Good Inflation News. So Why Isn't It Going Up?

By The Finance Edge | The Finance Edge | 4 hours ago

I thought Bitcoin would like this inflation report.

Honestly, it had every reason to.

U.S. inflation came in at 3.4% in July, down from 3.5% in June. Core inflation also cooled to 2.5%.

On paper, that's not bad news for Bitcoin.

But Bitcoin didn't really care.

Instead of taking off, it stayed around $64,000 and later slipped closer to $63,000.

So I started wondering...

If inflation is cooling, why isn't Bitcoin going higher?

The Problem Wasn't the Inflation Number

The first thing to understand is that the inflation report wasn't a huge surprise.

The numbers basically came in where economists expected them to.

Headline CPI rose 3.4% year over year, while core CPI came in at 2.5%. Both matched forecasts.

That's important.

Markets don't only react to whether the news is good or bad.

They react to whether the news is better or worse than expected.

And this time, there wasn't much of a surprise.

Traders had already prepared for inflation to come in around these levels.

So when the report arrived, there wasn't a huge reason for everyone to suddenly start buying Bitcoin.

Bitcoin Needed Something More

This is where I think the market gets interesting.

A softer inflation number can make investors more comfortable with the idea of lower interest rates.

That's normally good for Bitcoin.

But one report isn't enough to completely change the Fed's outlook.

The Federal Reserve still has to look at jobs, inflation, wages, economic growth and plenty of other things before making a decision.

And the recent jobs report was already weak.

The U.S. economy unexpectedly lost 23,000 jobs in July.

So now we have a strange situation.

The jobs market looks weaker.

Inflation is cooling.

You would think Bitcoin would be celebrating.

But traders still aren't convinced.

There Is Another Problem

Bitcoin is also running into a level that it just can't seem to get through.

$65,000.

We've seen Bitcoin push toward that area several times, but buyers haven't been able to hold the price above it.

That matters.

If I were watching this market, I'd be more interested in whether Bitcoin can actually stay above $65K than whether it briefly touches it.

There's a big difference between breaking a level and holding it.

Right now, Bitcoin hasn't proven that it can do the second one.

Recent market analysis has also pointed to roughly $63,000 as an important demand area, while $65,000 remains a key resistance level.

So What Is Bitcoin Waiting For?

Maybe that's the wrong question.

Maybe Bitcoin isn't waiting for better news.

Maybe buyers simply aren't ready yet.

That's something I've learned to pay attention to.

Sometimes the market gets exactly the news people wanted, but the price barely moves.

That can tell you something.

It means there may be other forces that are more important right now.

For Bitcoin, those could include Fed expectations, geopolitical uncertainty, oil prices and simple lack of buying pressure.

And we shouldn't forget that Bitcoin has already spent a lot of time moving sideways.

Eventually, someone has to make the next big move.

I'm Watching $65K

For me, the situation is pretty simple.

I don't want to guess whether Bitcoin is going to $70K or $60K.

I'd rather watch what happens around $65K.

If buyers finally push Bitcoin above that level and actually hold it, things could get interesting very quickly.

But if Bitcoin keeps getting rejected there, I wouldn't be surprised to see traders become more cautious.

That's why the inflation report didn't disappoint me.

It actually gave us something useful.

It showed that even with inflation cooling, Bitcoin still needs buyers.

And right now, those buyers haven't shown up strongly enough.

Maybe they are waiting for the next Fed signal.

Maybe they're waiting for Bitcoin to break $65K first.

Or maybe they're simply not convinced yet.

Whatever the reason, one thing is clear to me.

Good economic news doesn't automatically make Bitcoin go up.

Sometimes the market needs more than good news.

It needs a reason to believe the next move is real.
