This evening, I listed an item on Ebay that I've had in my possession a very long time, an illuminating Heineken beer sign from the early 1980s. I'm a collector and over the years, I've found some interesting items but this one has been one of my favorites. It was made to sit atop atop and be plugged into a cash register machine. The sign reminds me of days gone by when I went to the local pub for a beer or two with my older brothers and friends. There'd be a live band rocking in the corner with people dancing, while we were in the other corner trying to play pool in spite of our double vision. In between sets, we'd all take turns slipping quarters into the jukebox to keep the music going.
It's safe to say, 'beer and music go hand in hand'.
I also remember another old saying, 'Beer and smoking go hand in hand'. Back in those days, you could cut a knife through all the cigarette smoke in any pub or bar you walked into. There were no laws prohibiting smoking anywhere back then. Changes in our smoking habits began in the early 90s when new anti-smoking laws were first implemented in Canada. Now, smoking is not allowed in any establishment, period. Knowing what we know now about second hand smoke, I support such rules.
The good news? Cigarettes may have 'gone away' but beer is here to stay. Hey, did I just come up with a new line?
I've always enjoyed a good Heineken. It goes down well after a hard day at work. There's yet another old saying that having just one drink a day (not two or three) can improve health and longevity. I like that saying. Has a nice ring to it.
So folks, remember to go ahead and have a good time and drink responsibly. You're an adult now! You can do whatever you want but please don't let your wife / husband find you under the coffee table again in the morning.
