When I first saw the name of this storm I could not help but laugh before I realized this was its actual name...... I had completely forgotten that it was possible to run out of names for the storms during Hurricane season. I have to say the whole naming system itself is honestly pretty awful. Why only a single list of names exists and they cannot add additional names if they need them seems rather dumb. To make matters worse they don't vote but for every 6 years and for instance the 2019 list that was used will be used again in 2025 but for whatever reason the World Meteorological Organization thinks this naming method is best.
While we have been lucky that the storm is not developing into a hurricane it is going to inundate the Houston area with water. Where I live is on the boundary of 6-10 inches of rain and 11-20 inches so it will be interesting to see how this developed. With Hurricane Harvey the Houston area was further impacted because rivers were already high, dams were already full, and the storm moved north following the rivers that drain into this area. Tropical Storm Beta though is moving away from the rivers as it continues to move north east. River levels are also much much better this time around with them being both lower and many areas receiving further fortifications for flooding since Harvey.
With someone like me though who has had brain surgeries the storm is a big thumbs down for me. My body is not able to regulate cerebral sprinal fluid or CSF well. CSF is the fluid that surrounds both your brain and your spinal column and is vital for protecting/cushioning these parts of the body. A Tropical Storm or a Hurricane is a low pressure system and this change in atmospheric pressure causes the CSF pressure to change in my head. For most people their body is able to easily handle this however due to my conditions it is not the case and causes excruciating pain, memory issues and general cognitive issues. Today was the first day of the bands from the storm hitting us and they have been hitting us all day. Currently the rain has stopped as of 6:45pm but this storm is moving slow enough that it will rain till Thursday according to the most recent weather forecasts I have heard from my friends in the field.
While I am laid up right now I will get to experience the first time of teaching kids in person during a storm like this and tomorrow will be interesting to say the least. I avoid taking pain meds as much as I can because I hate pumping myself full of man made compounds because I am only 25 and this is something I will have to deal with the rest of my life. With this storm though I will have to change that to help me out with the kids I have grade 1-8 but we will see how it goes!
