Back Home in Texas

By Cje95 | Texas Living | 26 Feb 2021

Today, I was fortunate enough to get some time off to be able to visit my family back home in Texas. Given everything that happened last week I was anxious to get back. My parents for the first time are empty nesters and my dog is staying with them.

My dog, Rusty, was given 2-3 weeks left to live in December of 2019. Now the Vets have given him a clean bill of health and have no idea what he had or how he got over it. Rusty has been with me since my second severe concussion that caused 8 months of memory loss and all my neurosurgeries. He has really been one thing that has been stable in my life. When he was sick I was devastated and the vets have said it is best he stays at my parents house, his house, rather than move with me.

My parents were extremely lucky to only have power briefly go off but still when I arrived today I was shocked. Everything is dead. The grass, bushes, plants, everything it’s all dead. I was completely taken back as my mom had many potted plants that she has kept for years that died during the winter event. When I asked my mom about this she told me how they not only moved the plants into the garage to buffer them but also covered them and still they died. While there is an off chance that they could come back it was crazy seeing that house after house have practically removed all of their flowerbed. Lawns are not even brown they are colorless and plants have been removed from flowerbeds. Hedges have been cut down at their base it is just crazy.

Trees are also struggling as it looks like multiple trees on the street will not make it. Large chunks of almost ever tree are dead or dying of shock. This weather really has wrecked the environment here and it’s beyond what I even imagined.
