A few weeks ago the Sargent at Arms for the House sent out an email highlighting security efforts and changes that were being made to address prior "security incidents." Now what those incidents were well I do not know and neither do any of the people I know who work on The Hill. However, they now have us open up our coffee cups if they are metal and thus can't go through the magnetometer as well as make you wait for your bag/stuff to go through the x-ray machine before you are allowed to go through. Well today we had our first pretty significant security threat this Congress.
When I walked past the area from a few blocks over there was still a heavy police presence an hour later.
So what happened? See it wasn't just they arrested someone with a gun.... that would be to normal and two simple.... no they arrested an 18 year old who was dressed in a tactical vest and gloves who went running towards the Western Terrace with a loaded shotgun. I kid you not this guy ran at the police and the fence with a loaded shotgun and as soon as Capitol Police drew their guns on him and ordered him to drop the gun and get on the ground he did so. When they went to search his car they found that well it wasn't his car and based off of what I have found out so far appears that it was likely stolen. Inside it was a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask along with more ammo.....
So yeah that a day of working on Capitol Hill for you..... random 18 year olds running at the Capitol building with loaded shotguns it appears. Yayyy I cant wait for tomorrow......
