U.S. Elections

It is Election Day here in the United States and the implications of this year's elections are key on several fronts. For those of you who are not aware I work in Congress for a House of Representatives Committee. I say that so that before anyone tries to comment or clap back at me for what I have to say I was on The Hill when Jan 6 happened so trust me I know.

All of that being said while the House will be decided this evening. The Senate is unlikely to be due to the races being as close as they are and some states requiring a 50% threshold to be hit for someone to win without an election going to a runoff election. That being said it will probably be a couple of weeks before we get a clear view of everything as with the runoffs one candidate tends to pull ahead of the other before the vote.

A ton of people have commented that our democracy is at stake this election however that idea can be applied to numerous elections throughout the United States history. Not only that but the basic separation of powers prevents some of the crazy things people have stated from happening.

One thing that has only recently been getting more attention but has been brewing for years is happening no matter who wins this election and that is violence is increasing against officials and government workers overall. Now we have been here before and emerged when it comes to domestic terrorism period. In the last century for example there was the Weather Underground Organization which caused considerable issues including in 1971 setting off a bomb on the Senate side of the US Capitol. The US though was able to navigate through this and emerge the other side much as I expect it to this time.

Both Parties have said that if they are in power crypto and blockchain regulation is going to be a large fixture next Congress and I would not expect that to change. With the fear of COVID waning and our ability to understand and navigate it increasing Congressional Committee hearings are going to return next Congress and with that legislation will be hashed out in front of the people and not behind closed doors. Things like this should be really encouraging for the American people and the world at large.

As a random side note, it should also be known that the markets love a gridlocked Congress where one side is controlled by one party and the other party is in control of the other. Keeping this in mind it will be interesting to see if the markets continue operating under that precedent or if this time it changes.
