Last week I received a call I was extremely surprised to get but very very happy. I was interning for the Congressional Race for TX-22 and last Tuesday was asked if I would like to come on full-time. It was an easy choice to make as politics have always fascinated me and I personally know the person running so I am extremely confident in who he is and what he stands for.
Working for him has allowed me to meet several different important people in American politics. This last weekend I met Congressional Minority Whip Steve Scalise at a rally and listen to his story about when he was attacked on the baseball field that almost killed him 3 years ago. Previously, I was able to meet House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy which was really really cool. An interesting thing about this though is that I only met these important people due to COVID shutting down the economy like it has and continues to do. It is definitely a silver lining to this whole situation.
I spend at least 10 hours a day working at/with the campaign and typically seem to drive 100-150 miles a day. It is defiantly something that I did not initially anticipate doing once I graduated. I have a coworker who is just 23 and has been working with the campaign for the last year and I am amazed he has been able to do it. I am under him helping alleviate the amount of stuff he has to do. He relays phone calls to me and I take care of what I can. Currently, I have been dropping off signs, shirts, and anything else I can to people. I also monitor the voter lines and relay if different polling locations get backed up to help direct people who want to vote but don't want to wait in the long lines that can form.
Its defiantly is a grind but something that has been really rewarding with the relationships I have built and the opportunities that have opened up. It has really made me start to wonder if I want to continue the neuroscience route or maybe pivot to work in politics. Will see how this election goes first though to make that choice! Who knows maybe I will be asked to join staff or intern if my guy wins!
