DC Chaos

By Cje95 | Texas Boy in a DC World | 11 Feb 2021

Given everything that has happened since the beginning of the year, I assumed that at this point I had been through the craziest things DC had to offer me. Little did I know though how wrong of an idea this was. Today, well really last night, kicked off a series of weather events that seem to have thrown even those who have come to call DC home for a loop.

Being from Houston, Texas I have always gotten a kick out of how poorly people drove in the rain. Whenever I got outside the city limits or traveled between my home outside of Houston and College Station where I attended Texas A&M it was easy to identify those who were natives and had driven in the rain before and those from out of state who really had no idea how to drive in Texas weather. Now when it snowed or froze over no one knew how to drive but that was because of how rare of an occurrence that was.

When I moved to DC I knew we would face weather I would not necessarily know how to drive in. Ice and snow are so uncommon in Texas even if I had driven in it every time it occurred I still would not know how to navigate in it. Well, it appears no one in DC knows how to drive in it either including the people who have spent their entire lives in this area! You could have knocked me off my feet with a feather coming into the office today and there being no line at the checkpoints. That there were no lines for coffee besides the few National Guard members that were there and when I got to my office at 9:10 instead of my typical 8:50 there was no one there yet either. It was not till 9:30 that the only person who was going to come to the office showed up.

Making matters worse was that I do not have access to my government email from my apartment as our WiFi is not deemed a secure connection. This is bypassed with the computers however you have to have a special key thing that will produce a VPN for you to use. For whatever reason in this office as an intern, I do not get said key so when I showed up today I was unaware of the people not showing up. It was an issue since I had to scramble to get all of my stuff hooked up to start my job. This day is already turning out to be interesting and it is just the start.

For whatever reason this post did not get published this morning as I thought it had but this covers how the morning went very well!
