Prior to the government shutdown the clean continuing resolution (CR) that the House passed was only going to extend funding for an additional 7 weeks. Well now we are 3 weeks in to those 7 weeks and talks for the full year spending bills have ground to a halt. In response to this GOP leadership has had to start pitching the ideas for how long this CR could be from the middle to end of December (good by Christmas for staff), the end of January to all the way to the end of next September.
That is interesting about the year long CR that some Members are discussing is that the Members mentioning this are from the House Freedom Caucus aka the far right of the party. These Members tend to hate CRs in general and if one is going to pass it has to be short term like the one that passed last month. Instead they want to just punt the whole thing so that Democrats cannot run on any sort of spending increases or use the CRs as pain points for Republicans.
It should be noted that even with the House entering its fourth week of recess
The House has moved to go to a conference negotiation with the Senate to negotiate three of the 12 regular appropriations bills — funding for the departments of Veterans Affairs and Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration, rural development, military construction, and the legislative branch — but Senate Democrats have prevented that conference from moving forward amid the shutdown.
This is critical to bridge the final gaps and pass the spending bills so with the Senate failing to even vote to do that Speaker Johnson has less of a reason to bring us back into session. From this whole thing I have learned what a mess this place is. I have been here for four almost five years and this is just plain sad.
The end result is American people are hurt. Republicans still have the growing momentum with polls showing the blame is shifting towards Democrats from Republicans as more votes fail in the Senate and the House just looks at everyone and goes look we cant do anything else they have to decide to fund us. Senate Dems have also shown more and more cracks emerging with the Military Spending Bill failure last week and now the rumor is Senate Dems are worried about funding the Government after the "No Kings" protest without getting some sort of win.... the issue is they still dont really have something they can get to pull off a win.
It seems we are going to hit and in my opinion surpass the longest shutdown ever (that one was partial as multiple Departments and Agencies were funded) and that is really going to throw DC into a bigger tailspin since Federal workers will all have missed at least one paycheck and in many cases two.
