Last week I spent two days attending an Investigation and Oversight boot camp for a small group of Congressional Staffers. Each day was 8 and a half hours long with only two five-minute breaks and one twenty-five-minute break. Not to mention that for the most part, the 20 participants in this camp were lawyers and I do not even have an undergrad degree in a law-related field adding to the challenge. Our instructors for this course brought almost 100 years of combined experience from both sides of the aisle and both chambers of Congress. To make the dense material a little easier to process they would relate the situation or topic to either an investigation that they had done or a high-profile event that had recently occurred.
It was here that brought up SBF and used him as an example much to my delight and, to be honest, my understanding. Across the political spectrum when SBF was arrested it was criticized as it more or less silenced him before he could testify before Congress. I was in this camp of people who were upset and wanted him to testify under oath and try to get the truth. What I learned though from this boot camp though is that this is not always the case. One thing we can all agree on I think about SBF is that he can spin a story and create some crazy tale and a lot of people will sadly believe him.
Just look back at before his arrest when people with deep pockets were still backing him up. Only once he was arrested did it seem to shake some people free of his trance. If he had been able to testify before Congress then he would have been able to leverage this huge platform and audience to try and manipulate the situation. Based on the charges he is facing now he could even just lie under oath to Congress and the penalty wouldn't change much considering what he is facing. Testifying would have just done nothing but have backfired on the House Financial Services Committee and in the end, they ended up dodging a bullet.
The current CEO of FTX was able to testify in his place and actually give the Committee some answers and more importantly, they were true and honest answers. SBF wouldn't have done that and would have continued his same song and dance further complicating the criminal proceedings now against him. Hopefully one day he or even the others who have already pled guilty will be willing to testify before Congress and explain what had happened. After all, they cannot get in any more trouble unless they lie under oath as that would open up a whole new level of criminal possibilities.
