Optical Fiber First, 5G/6G Next

By Debesh Choudhury | TechFuture | 12 Nov 2025

Optical communication made a very BIG impact on the world of communication.

  • Don't we remember the pains of cross-connections and noisy audio in the landline telephone days?

  • Optical fibers made communication explode in speed and ultra-high bandwidth.

Whether you accept it or not, the backbone and most of the infrastructural muscles of modern-day high-speed and large data rate Internet and mobile communication are the gifts of fiber optics only.

  • Do you know: "How Much Fiber Optics is Deployed in running the 5G Mobile and Wireless Communication Systems Worldwide?"

The title of a 2024 news article was "Fiber First, 5G Next," which is so true.

Optical fibers first, and 5G/6G next

How many km of optical fibers have been laid underground after the 5G rollout?

  • In India, for example, the monthly average of optical fiber laid increased sixfold after the introduction of 5G services, reaching 101,550 kilometers per month, compared to just 16,712 kilometers before the 5G rollout.

This surge reflects the global trend of investing in fiber infrastructure to support 5G deployment, as fiber is considered indispensable for realizing the full potential of 5G networks.

  • The 6G is upcoming, and it will need more optical fibers to run.

A link to a recent tech article can give a true picture.

What would happen to global communication without optical fiber communication?

  • May we write explicitly that it is optical fiber communication, which is a breakthrough development that propelled the world from the Middle Ages to a really modern world?

Without optical fiber networks, the world will go BACK to the grand old era of cross-connections and noisy audio-only telephony!

Conclusion

  • The world of communication, including the ultrahigh bandwidth Internet and mobile communication, has been running on the brilliant power of optical fiber communication systems and infrastructure.

The modern era is being propelled by the boons of optics and photonics.
