By Duckers | Sunrise Angler | 20 Mar 2023

These freshwater fish are known for their high energy and aggressive nature, making them a fun catch indeed. In this article, we'll discuss some tips and techniques for catching white bass, as well as some gear and bait recommendations to help increase your chances of success.

White bass can be found in a variety of freshwater habitats, including rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. They tend to school up in large numbers during their spawning season, which typically occurs in the spring when water temperatures reach around 15 degrees (Celcius). During the rest of the year, white bass can be found in deeper water, often near underwater structures such as drop-offs, points, and humps.

When fishing for white bass, it’s important to understand their behaviour and habitat. White bass are known to school, so once you find one, you’re likely to find more. They tend to swim in open water, and are often found in large schools near points, drop-offs, and other underwater structure. They also tend to feed more actively in the early morning and late afternoon, so it’s worth planning your fishing trip accordingly.

When it comes to gear, a medium-light to medium spinning rod with a fast action tip is recommended, along with a spinning reel that can hold at least 100 yards of 6-10 lb test line. White bass are known for their fighting ability, so it’s important to have a rod with some backbone to it. As for lures, white bass can be caught on a variety of baits, including small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, and live bait such as minnows or worms.

When casting for white bass, a good technique is to cast out and then reel in quickly, using a steady retrieve. White bass are known for their aggressive strikes, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different retrieval speeds and patterns to see what works best. It’s also worth trying different lures until you find the one that the white bass are responding to on that particular day.

In Ontario (where I'm from), white bass can be found in a variety of lakes and rivers, including Lake Erie, Lake Simcoe, and the Trent-Severn Waterway. Lake Erie is particularly well-known for its white bass fishing, with the summer months being the most productive time to catch them.

White bass can be a fun and rewarding fish to target for anglers of all levels. By understanding their behaviour and habitat, using the right gear and lures, and following regulations and best practices for catch-and-release, you can increase your chances of a successful white bass fishing trip. So, grab your gear and head out to the water for some exciting white bass fishing!
