During my morning commute, as the sun began to peek over the horizon, I took a brief detour through a quiet, beautiful countryside road. Standing there, looking at the open sky, the lush green rice fields, and a small irrigation stream running alongside the asphalt, it hit me. Technology likes to use heavy words, but the blueprints of the digital future are already written right here in our everyday landscapes.
In today's lesson on BitDegree, I dived into The Different Types of Blockchains. It turns out that just like the physical world, Web3 doesn't rely on just one type of path. Depending on the goal—whether it's running a global cryptocurrency or handling sensitive corporate workflows—developers choose different types of blockchain infrastructures.
Let’s unpack the five main types of blockchains using the raw, unfiltered logic of the rural landscape!

1. Public Blockchains (The Open Village Road)
Public blockchains are open networks where anyone in the world can participate, validate transactions, and maintain the shared ledger. They are fully decentralized and transparent, relying on consensus mechanisms like Proof of Work (PoW) or Proof of Stake (PoS).
· Examples: Bitcoin (peer-to-peer cash) and Ethereum (the foundation for smart contracts and dApps).
· Trade-off: High security and transparency, but they can suffer from congestion, slower speeds, and high transaction fees during peak hours.
The Roadside Perspective:
Think of a Public Blockchain like the main village asphalt road in the photo. It is a public facility. Anyone is free to ride their motorcycle through it without asking for permission. If a small pothole appears, the community can come together to patch it up (validation/mining). Furthermore, when the government repairs the road using village funds (dana desa), a public transparency board is erected, showing the exact budget, materials, and contractor. Total transparency, open to all.
2. Private Blockchains (The Private Rice Fields)
Private blockchains are restricted, invitation-only networks where access is strictly limited to specific, verified participants. These are highly favored by enterprises that want to leverage blockchain's security and immutability while keeping complete control over their internal data.
· Examples: Hyperledger Fabric and R3 Corda (designed for secure corporate and financial workflows).
· Trade-off: Extremely fast and efficient with total data control, but it completely sacrifices the core ethos of decentralization.
The Roadside Perspective:
Look right next to the asphalt road: the lush green rice fields. Even though they sit right beside a public path, you cannot just ride your motorcycle into them or start harvesting the crops. Those fields are private property, tightly bound by official land certificates (SHM). Only the legal owner or trusted farmers with explicit permission can step inside, till the land, or manage the harvest. It is a closed, secure ecosystem.
3. Consortium Blockchains (The Water Management Committee)
A consortium blockchain (or federated blockchain) is a semi-private network. Instead of being controlled by a single entity (like a private chain) or left completely open (like a public chain), it is collectively governed by a pre-selected group of organizations.
· Examples: Quorum (developed by JPMorgan for financial alliances) and Energy Web Chain (tailored for the energy sector).
· Trade-off: Better scalability and balanced governance, but it requires deep, mutual trust among the participating institutions.
The Roadside Perspective:
Think about how the farmers manage the shared water supply for their fields. It isn’t controlled by just one wealthy farmer (private), nor is it left free for any random traveler on the road to manipulate (public). Instead, it is governed by the Local Farmers’ Water Association (P3A / Gapoktan). Only the elected representatives from a few cooperating villages have the authority to hold meetings, open the main water gates, and distribute resources fairly according to agreed-upon schedules.
4. Hybrid Blockchains (The Multi-Purpose Stream)
Hybrid blockchains blend the best of both worlds. They allow organizations to run a private, restricted system for sensitive data while anchoring a portion of that data onto a public blockchain for transparent verification.
· Examples: XinFin (XDC Network) for trade finance and IBM Blockchain.
· Trade-off: Offers a flexible balance of privacy and security, but implementing and maintaining two interconnected layers can be highly complex.
The Roadside Perspective:
Look at the small irrigation canal running parallel to the road. It operates on a hybrid logic. On the public side, the stream is open—any passerby can stop to wash their hands, cast a fishing line, or enjoy the flowing water. But on the private side, the exact volume of water, its hidden pipes, and the internal distribution channels into the specific rice fields are strictly regulated behind the scenes to keep the agricultural business running without flooding.
5. Sidechains (The Dirt Shortcut Path)
Sidechains are independent, separate blockchains that run parallel to a main blockchain (the Mainnet). They are connected via a two-way bridge, allowing assets to move back and forth. Sidechains act as release valves, handling heavy traffic to prevent the main network from getting congested.
· Examples: Liquid Network (for Bitcoin) and Plasma Chains / Polygon PoS (for Ethereum).
· Trade-off: Provides immense flexibility and blazing-fast transaction speeds, but requires its own separate security measures to prevent external vulnerabilities.
The Roadside Perspective:
Imagine if a massive delivery truck breaks down on the main asphalt road, causing a total traffic jam. As a Street Warrior trying to deliver a time-sensitive package, you don't just sit there. You immediately steer your motorcycle onto the narrow dirt path or the ridge of the fields running alongside the main road. Your vehicle (the asset) temporarily moves to an alternative path to bypass the congestion, keeping your journey fast and efficient, before merging back onto the main road down the line.
