Deadlock : Short Story Where Love And Sorrow Have Come To Mix

Sandra and Pamela were two Nigerian sisters who lived in Lagos. They were young when they lost their parents; Sandra was thirteen years old and Pamela was fifteen at the time. They and their parents were being driven to Lekki Beach for a family picnic, when they were stopped by two male thieves. The thieves, not more than twenty years of age, robbed their parents of all they had on them and shot them dead.

Sandra and Pamela had to be raised by Nick, their uncle, who made sure they had university education and procured employment as they grew. They were ever so thankful of this, and accorded Nick a lot of respect.

Sandra had grown up to be a very pretty young woman. She met Gordon, who was a young handsome banker with a bright future. They fell in love and were in a committed relationship. Gordon was eager to marry Sandra, who also longed to be his wife. Sandra took Gordon to her uncle, who became so happy she had found a man who loved her and was keen on marrying her.

“This is good news,” said Uncle Nick. “Sandra, has your sister met Gordon?” Nick spoke further.

“Uncle, our plan was to come to you first before going to Sister Pamela’s place,” said Sandra.

“Oh, that was very thoughtful of you,” Uncle Nick said. “Best of luck in your marriage.”

“Thank you so much,” Sandra and Gordon said together, with large smiles on their faces.

Pamela, who was now thirty years old and married, recognized Gordon the moment she saw him. She was furious, but chose not to act immediately. She would allow Sandra to first say why she had brought a man like Gordon to her residence. Pamela was incredulous when Sandra revealed Gordon was the man she wanted to marry.

“You can’t marry him!” Pamela screamed and cast glances full of hatred at Gordon. She suddenly developed a headache, having been hit hard by the news Sandra brought. “I remember him so well. You can’t marry him,” Pamela further said.

Gordon stood confused, as he could not understand what Pamela was talking about.

“Please I can’t remember meeting you before now,” Gordon quietly said to Pamela.

“Shut up!” Pamela screamed at Gordon who suddenly chose to speak no more.

“Sister Pamela, what is wrong with you?” Sandra asked.

“You can’t marry him! That’s final!” Pamela responded.

“But I’m already pregnant with Gordon’s child,” said Sandra.

Pamela collapsed at once. She had to be driven to a nearby hospital where she as revived minutes later. She did not want Gordon around. “Get out!” Pamela shouted severally. Gordon quietly left the hospital room the three of them were in.

“Why do you hate Gordon so much?” Sandra asked Pamela immediate after Gordon left.

“He is not good for us,” said Pamela. “He is evil!”

“What are you talking about?” Sandra asked again.

“He is one of the thieves who shot and killed Mum and Dad,” Pamela replied and broke down in tears. Sandra felt shocked through to her bones. “Gordon……!” she screamed.

“You can’t marry him!” Pamela yelled.

Tears were now drifting from Sandra’s eyes. Thoughts of having an abortion or committing suicide were flooding her mind. No! The baby in my womb is part of me too, she thought. She would not harm her own flesh and blood. “Gordon, why me?” Sandra screamed as she cried her heart out, hating her fate for making her this way.

Gordon ran back inside the room, saw both sisters in tears, but couldn’t figure out why.
