Enter the Cryptoverse Ep. 02 - My Crypto Origin Story aka How My Investing Goals Evolved

By soulwhat | thecryptoverse | 19 Aug 2020

My crypto origin story is a more a constant unfolding here & now than it is hero's journey.

I got into Bitcoin a few years ago when one Bitcoin cost around $225 dollars.Ironically, my renewed interest in Crypto began when Ethereum was just about the same price.

I was the proud owner of just about 2.5 BTC before I made the best investor mistake I could ever make and sold one.

This was the great because it taught me how important having long-term goals, and more importantly, patience were. But it's not like that hit me over the head overnight because then I sold more and more and more! Before you knew it, all I had left was about $20.

From there, Coinbase stopped doing business where I was living, so I was forced to sell even that.

Not knowing my way around Crypto, it didn't occur to me to seek out alternatives.

You live, you learn, and for me, these experiences have influenced my overall thinking about the future.  This has helped me learn more about investing in general, where my focus thankfully found its way in the years since.  In no way am I a pro, and chances are I'm more lucky than not, but for the most part, I've tried to make investing as easy as possible for myself by reading, talking to professionals, and taking advantage of matching retirement plans at work, savings apps, etc.  I even started a business, which taught me even more.

At the close of my first year in business, a self-funded labor of love, I began to question the ROI.  For the amount of capital I put in, coupled with the hours spent in creating, managing, and selling products, I had to check my personal goals by examining a few questions:

  • Why did I start a business?
  • What was I trying to achieve with my investments?
  • Was there a common thread that I was seeking?

The most important of these questions was the last and the common theme that wove through all of that - I'm seeking freedom

As that became evident, I switched course on the business by being flexible and realistic in my undertakings.  The biggest a-ha there was that if I took half the money I had put into funding my projects, chances are good that would mature over time in investments.  Or at the very least, the loss wouldn't be as great, and I'd still have more than zero, or more debt.

Taking these learnings, I got into Stash, Robinhood, and SoFi.  As you can guess, more mistakes have been made along the way there, but my hypothesis has proved true - the money invested is still there (and then some)

All of this led me to back to Cryptocurrency via Crypto Art, which you can read about in my first blog here.  I'm still learning a great deal about finance, investing, and really, Life in general.  But it's definitely an adventure, and the microcosm of Cryptocurrency that is Crypto Art has so much to explore!
