Japanese learning #2: Transliteration is easy!

By Crazy kappa | Skill acquisition | 27 Oct 2021

One thing that I like about Japanese is identifying and reading transliterated words is straightforward because they are all written in Katakana (at least from what I've seen so far), so I understand them fairly quickly. I am proficient in Hebrew, but whenever I read a transliterated word I have to spend twenty minutes looking at it to realize it is transliterated. The Japanese transliteration system saves me a ton of time when I am practicing reading or learning vocab and spares me frustration as opposed to in Hebrew when I am left realizing I had just wasted 5 minutes trying to understand that ביסקיטים is biscuits transliterated. When I see Katakana, it automatically switches my interpretation to transliterated words, it's like a hint, when I see ドル my mind switches to similar-sounding English words and then I realize, "Hey, that's probably dollar."

Now for my daily learning stats:

Today I learned: 5 words bringing my total to 432 words

I watched: 2 episodes of anime

I'm still pretty busy with other stuff, so I can't devote a large chunk of time to learning Japanese. So, today I tried a different method of not doing all my learning together but instead breaking it up. I did vocab during a short break and watched episode 4 of Haikyuu Season 2 during my lunch break. I felt that I wasn't 100% percent tuned in to what I was learning/watching as opposed to when I do it at home, in the quiet of my own room, but beggars can't be choosers. Somehow, I managed to finish my homework a bit early and snuck in episode 5 of Haikyuu Season 2 (one of my favorite episodes in the whole series because of the fight at the end of the episode, if you've watched Haikyuu you know what I'm talking about), and episode 6 of Haikyuu Season 2.

That's all for today folks. If you've got any tips or tricks feel free to comment them. If you know of a place where I can read manga (especially berserk) in Japanese please let me know.
