Avalanche Foundation Explores Meme Coin Surge for Portfolio Expansion

By Diviner | SimplyJustCrypto | 29 Dec 2023

The Avalanche Foundation, known for backing the development of the Avalanche blockchain ecosystem through grants and investments, is contemplating the acquisition of meme coins. This move acknowledges the diverse segments within the cryptocurrency market, prompted by the recent surge in tokens like bonk (BONK), which significantly boosted activity on the Solana network.

Their selection process for these coins will hinge on various factors, including the number of holders, liquidity thresholds, project maturity, adherence to fair launch principles, and overall social sentiment. The Foundation shared its intentions to utilize Culture Catalyst, aiming to celebrate and support the cultural and playful aspects represented by meme coins. This initiative involves purchasing specific Avalanche-based meme coins to curate a collection, expanding their involvement beyond NFTs, RWAs, and other crypto assets.

Recent data from CoinGecko highlights the notable surge—up to 25%—in several Avalanche-based meme coins, such as COQ, husky (HUSKY), and shibx (SHIBX), particularly following the Foundation's announcement.

Meme coins have often been viewed skeptically within the blockchain community, yet the success of these tokens, notably dogecoin (DOGE) and shiba inu (SHIB), may be altering perceptions regarding investing in this niche.

The surge in bonk's price in early December played a pivotal role in boosting trading volumes on Solana-based decentralized exchanges (DEXs), surpassing Ethereum's usual dominance. This momentum even resulted in sold-out Solana Saga phones, offering BONK rewards to owners, despite previously sluggish sales in October.

The craze for meme coins extended to the Avalanche network in mid-December, highlighted by the emergence of Coq Inu (COQ) themed around hens and dog-themed tokens like kimbo (KIMBO). Notably, a trader acquired around $450 worth of COQ shortly after its release, which has since surged to over $2.5 million, as reported by CoinDesk last week.
