A spot ETF and a sealed vault put ZEC back at 2016 prices, with a network upgrade due November 5. Most of the new money owns a claim in a glass box. What a "Zcash bridge" means now, and how to get native ZEC without one.
The bell
On August 25, a fund that owns nothing except an encrypted cryptocurrency started trading on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH. Grayscale billed it as the first exchange-traded product anywhere to offer spot exposure to Zcash. It opened with roughly 387,000 ZEC, about $313 million, held by Coinbase Custody. It charges 2.50% per year, roughly 10 times that of a typical Bitcoin ETF.
Four weeks later, the coin inside did something it had not done since launch week. On September 22, ZEC traded at $1,648.70, its highest price since 2016, up roughly 2,500% on the year. In the week ending September 18, Zcash spot ETFs took in $98.2 million, more than any of the other 13 crypto products tracked. A move like that sends people trying to get in and people trying to get out to the same search query: zcash bridge.
What actually happened this year
The rally started with a resignation. In January, the entire engineering and product team at Electric Coin Company, the firm that built Zcash, resigned after a governance dispute with its nonprofit board. By March, the same people, now Zcash Open Development Lab, had renamed the Zashi wallet Zodl and raised more than $25 million from Paradigm and a16z crypto.
Then the code broke. In late May, a researcher found a critical soundness flaw in Orchard, the network's main shielded pool: in principle, it allowed someone to create coins out of nothing, and because the pool is encrypted, the chain could not show whether that had happened. On July 28, Zcash activated Ironwood, a new shielded pool, and turned Orchard into exit-only, with a turnstile that blocks more value from leaving than verifiably went in. A project worth billions found a hole in its own cryptography and sealed the room in two months, in public. Next comes NU7, targeted for November 5, which cuts target block time from 75 seconds to 25.
The glass box
The detail most coverage skipped: ZCSH keeps its ZEC in transparent Coinbase custody wallets, so the ETF delivers price exposure without touching the shielded technology that makes Zcash different from every other coin on the exchange. Coinbase itself only sends ZEC to transparent addresses. Meanwhile, more than 30% of supply now sits in the shielded pool. The people who bought the ticker own a claim on encrypted money kept in a glass box. The people who bought the coin can close the box.
That distinction is why "zcash bridge" is a top search this month.
What a Zcash bridge is in 2026
Search "how to bridge Zcash," and you get several products sharing one word. Zodl's swap feature routes through NEAR Intents to convert dozens of assets into ZEC delivered to a fresh shielded address. NEAR's Zolana Bridge puts a wrapped ZEC token on Solana.
Almost every rail, SwapKit's NEAR and Maya routes, hands you a transparent address; shielding is a step you take in your own wallet afterward. And a "ZEC on Solana" token is a claim on ZEC held somewhere else. It is not ZEC. Ronin lost $625 million, and Wormhole lost $325 million in 2022 through exactly that "somewhere else."
The route that skips the bridge
There is an older answer to the ZEC bridge question: swap the asset, wallet to wallet. You hold BTC or USDT in a wallet you control, and a self-custodial swap aggregator routes the conversion across its liquidity sources and delivers native ZEC to the Zcash address you give it. You do not need to hold or interact with a wrapped version of ZEC, and there is no platform balance to withdraw later.
SimpleSwap has run that model since 2018 across 2,800+ assets and 20+ CEX and DEX liquidity sources, and ZEC is one of the routes. The fee is dynamic and built into the quoted rate; for some assets, it may start from 0.2%. Network fees go to the blockchain rather than to SimpleSwap. A fixed rate locks the quote for 20 minutes, which matters on an asset that jumped 20% in 24 hours in early September. Most crypto-to-crypto swaps need no account. SimpleSwap runs risk-based controls such as transaction screening and monitoring, described in its Anti-Financial Crime and KYC Policy, and KYC may be required for transaction security and compliance. Availability depends on the Terms of Service and on your jurisdiction, and ZEC's availability varies by venue and market, so check before you send.
The ZEC route, in order:
-
Choose the pair, for example USDT to ZEC, and read the estimate. It already includes the fee.
-
Pick fixed or floating.
-
Paste a Zcash address from a wallet you control and check that its format is supported. Zcash supports several address and receiver types, and service support can vary, so confirm compatibility before creating the swap.
-
Send the deposit and save the order ID.
-
When ZEC arrives, shield it inside your own wallet if you want it in the encrypted pool. After Ironwood, that means the Ironwood pool; Orchard is exit-only.
NU7 touches this route too.
"Reducing Zcash's target block time from 75 to 25 seconds can materially shorten confirmation waits on the ZEC side of a swap," says Stefan Lauer, Head of Infrastructure at SimpleSwap. "How much users actually notice will still depend on confirmation requirements and on the other network involved in the route."
Before you send anything
Native or wrapped. If the token you are receiving lives on Solana or NEAR, you hold a bridge's promise, and its security is now your security. If you want the encryption, you want native ZEC.
Address type. Zcash supports multiple address and receiver types, and not every service supports every format. Confirm compatibility before you send, and consider a small test transaction on an unfamiliar route. The address checks in Safety Academy apply to ZEC too.
Zcash spent eight years as the coin people argued about and rarely used. In 2026 it got a team walkout, a sealed vault, a vote and a ticker. The ticker is the least interesting part. The plumbing that gets you into ZEC and back out, whether you call it a Zcash bridge or a swap, now works well enough that one question remains: a line on a brokerage statement, or notes in a wallet only you can open.
