Equipment for using Metaverse

Equipment For Diving Into The Metaverse

By SimpleSwap | SimpleSwap Blog | 7 Apr 2023

The concept of metaverse is becoming more popular each day. Developers are trying to do everything they can so users could experience virtual reality in its full glory. Now there are many ways to interact with VR, and in this article we will talk about the main conductors in the Metaverse.

Metaverse from your smartphone

Many metaverses that are simple in terms of mechanics can be used on mobile devices. Often it offers a chat, as well as a possibility of little interaction with the virtual world and other participants. There are no opportunities for creators there, because it would require more complex functions. However, you can always login into the platform from your personal computer.

Some would say that accessing  metaverses from a smartphone is easier and more comfortable than using apps on a PC or VR. Because nowadays almost everyone has a smartphone, and the app itself does not require any difficult settings. But for creators, such applications can be inconvenient — the available functionality in them is inferior to desktop metaverses.

Examples of metaverses that you can use on your smartphone: Arcona, Spatial, Avakin Life, Imvu, Zepeto, Pixity.

Entering the metaverse from a PC

Most of the metaverses that can be accessed from a PC are browser-based. But there are also many platforms (especially if it's a gaming metaverse) that have their own applications. The app helps to optimize gaming processes and improve user experience.

These platforms do not need a powerful computer, because they are designed for a wide audience. But for example, Decentraland and The Sandbox applications will not run on any PC, even with low graphics. The situation will change with time and better optimization, since these apps are still in the beta version stage.

Some metaverses work both in the browser and on the desktop. And if your PC can launch a desktop application, then you can try to download an app. You’ll see the difference in quality and performance for yourself.

Examples of such metaverses: Roblox, Decentraland, Sandbox, Second Life, Voxels, Fortnite, Virbela.

Entering the Metaverse with a VR Headset

Virtual reality technology is being used by the metaverses for better interaction between users. With the help of VR devices, you can perform many actions like unique movements and gestures, as well as dancing.

With such technologies it is convenient to speak in front of an audience in the metaverse. The avatar looks more alive and you can observe the reaction of the public, just like in reality. But not every platform is ready to use VR sets.

There are several hardware options for entering virtual platforms: PC-connected VR headsets, standalone VR headsets, and additional gadgets for VR headsets. Let’s discuss all of them.

  • Login to platforms with VR headset and PC.

A VR headset that needs to be connected to a PC will cost less than fully standalone helmets. However, not every PC can be connected to a VR headset for it to work correctly, so be careful! It could be that the motion sensors won't read your gestures, or the VR apps won't be able to launch.

  • Using metaverses only with a VR headset.

Standalone VR headsets are helmets with their own processor. Therefore, you do not need to connect them to a PC. But because of this, they also cost significantly more than the ordinary ones.

Advantages of the wireless version:

  1. the absence of wires gives a completely different experience: you feel much freer and you will no longer want to return to the wired version;
  2. wireless headsets do not require a powerful PC;
  3. wireless headsets can be used outside the home: in the yard, at a party, at a road presentation.

Disadvantages of the wireless version:

  1. image quality is worse than wired counterparts.
  2. It is uncomfortable to stay in VR headsets in general for a long time.
  3. Purchase of additional interfaces for VR.

For the most complete immersion in virtual reality, additional gadgets can be purchased for the VR headset. It can be gloves, boots or entire suits. With them, your avatar in the metaverse will be more realistic. They accurately read all body movements, like head turns or hand and leg movements in space. This is especially useful for speakers, event organizers or creators.

There are many types of gadgets. They work with popular VR headsets and can therefore be purchased and combined as you wish. But not all metaverses support additional VR interfaces. The most popular metaverses that support most interfaces are Somnium Space and VRChat.

Examples of such metaverses are Spatial, AltspaceVR, VRChat, Somnium Space, Horizon World.

Conclusion

Users pay nothing to enter the metaverse. But the equipment can cost several hundred dollars. It all depends on your goals on the platform. In this article we discussed the most popular devices for metaverse:

  • For mobile platforms, login is possible with a smartphone;
  • For browser platforms and desktop applications, you will need a PC;
  • There are several types of equipment for VR platforms. PC-connected VR headsets, standalone VR headsets and additional interfaces.
