Crypto Easter Egg Hunt 🥚 🐇

By Notum DeFi App | Notum DeFi App | 12 Apr 2022

Congrats, it’s an Easter week, which means you’re going to have lots of fun while celebrating it with your beloved ones, eating chocolate rabbits, and having a fantastic Easter egg hunt. Have you known that the world of cryptocurrency has its own collection of easter eggs? You can find them in art, games, advertising, within the cryptocurrency markets, and beyond.

Let’s have a deeper look into the topic and reveal some of the easter eggs the crypto world has hidden!

According to the dictionary, an Easter Egg is “An unexpected or undocumented message or feature is hidden in a piece of software, intended as a joke or bonus. Also: a feature of this kind in film, music, and other forms of information or entertainment.”

  • “The Legend of Satoshi Nakamoto”

Marguerite de Courcelle creates under the pseudonym @coin_artist, and she’s famous for inventing the crypto-art puzzle, a new genre of images hiding difficult ciphers that reward the first solver with digital currency. The most famous piece of art is her oil pastel from 2015 called ‘Torched H34R7S’, the final work in a series called The Legend of Satoshi Nakamoto.

It depicts a turtledove, chess items, and a phoenix surrounded by flames, and the painting incorporates symbolic references to Bitcoin’s creator, as well as to Shakespeare and de Courcelle's personal life. In 2018 the riddle was solved by an anonymous person unlocking 5 bitcoins (BTC), at the time worth about $50,000.

Btw, can you find the hidden message by yourself without googling? 🧐

  • Street Mural in Paris

This one was solved in a week! Pascal Boyart, a graffiti artist, created a mural that was the modern interpretation of the 19th-century painting ‘Liberty Leading the People’ by a famous French artist, Eugène Delacroix, and it showed a French woman leading revolutionaries wearing yellow jackets with reference to the “Yellow Jackets” protests in France. It consisted of a code leading to a wallet with 0.28 BTC, $1000 at that moment, and a generous gift from a bitcoin holder Alister Milne. As it wasn't as difficult as the previous one, a Twitter user named Antoine revealed his team and himself as the winners and said they would soon discover the details.

  • Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto

This one is connected to the most famous name in the crypto world – Satoshi Nakamoto. It’s about Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto, a Japanese-American citizen from LA who has the same name as Bitcoin creator. This puzzle was created by the trading company Phemex, and it contains the reward of 2.1 BTC, at that moment, $18,000. The puzzle is an image of  Satoshi Nakamoto made in a shape of a maze. Users had to find the clues within the image that would lead them to the private key. It was told that it has something to do with the ‘ first 21-digit prime that can be found in the consecutive digits of the mathematical constant “e,” which represents Euler’s number.’ The purpose of this puzzle is to educate people about the private key custody and safety importance and to put promote the idea of a ‘cold’ wallet.

  • Call of Duty Black Ops 3

Deep within the game, a billboard in post-apocalyptic Singapore reads, “Live life in confidence knowing your bank will take care of your future.” Given the war-torn hellhole it’s placed in, it’s safe to say that the game’s dystopian future is one in which banks can’t be relied on to provide for the man in the street. Whether the message is construed as a subtle shill for permissionless cryptocurrency, or simply a dig at the established financial order, it has unmistakable echoes of the headline encoded in Bitcoin’s genesis block.

Less ambiguous is the cryptocurrency concealed in No Man’s Sky. Last year, two players stashed bitcoin on a pair of planets in the survival game. Finding it called for visiting communication stations on the planets where the bounty was concealed. While player rather than developer-led, in every other respect, it meets the criteria for a bona fide in-game egg.

  • The Hidden Message in the Newspaper

The Genesis Block referred to The Times newspaper’s front page on Jan. 3, 2009.

In the messages they posted online, Satoshi Nakamoto made it clear that they weren’t a fan of the financial system, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that their reference to the failings of traditional banking was a statement on what Bitcoin was setting out to fight against.

If they really did create Bitcoin in response to the financial crisis, they’d be hard-pressed to find a more fitting message to launch with.

By the way, copies of that newspaper are now much more valuable than they were in 2009. There’s also a website made for that very purpose where a few original copies are for sale. Prices go from $250,000 to over $1 million.
