Rebasing is a feature of the Ampleforth protocol that alters the supply of the tokens. This means that the amount of AMPLs held in your wallet will be modified every 24 hours based on the weighted average of the token price throughout this time.

Ampleforth (AMPL) is a digital-asset-protocol for smart commodity-money. The Ampleforth protocol always seeks a price-supply equilibrium, and will automatically enter a state of unrest until it finds one.

So far I understand that ampleforth aims to be a true cryptocurrency. Reserve money by tradional banks prone to inflation and currency like bitcoin is opposing the bank reserves. Deflation of bitcoin is due the bitcoin is fixed asset. it is like gold that not every one can own the asset because of the price is not affordable. Ampleforth stays in the middle. Rebasing is like an algorithm that mantain AMPl token to be pegged at $1.

With rebasing, AMPL token is secure asset from volatility. One with AMPLs token in his wallet will have stable asset value. This is a  real money. Merchants will not be affraid of loosing value of AMPLs token when they accept the token as payment for their products and services. In the end, AMPL rebasing is solution to cryptocurrency volatility.
