The Vineyard

The Vineyard

By RFereru | Short Story | 13 Jan 2021

Albert, or Al for friends, got up at 5 in the morning, as he had been doing for a year. He got dressed, had a quick breakfast, and left the house.

Like every day for a year, he walked to his vineyard. A vineyard that he had bought a year ago by selling everything he had and borrowing something else. But that was his illusion of having his own vineyard to create, bottle, and sell his own wine.

For that reason, she did not mind walking so early in the morning, before dawn and with the cold that was at that time the two kilometers that separated her house from the vineyard: his love for the vineyards gave her warmth.

During this last year, he had tended the vineyards with the help of some workers he had hired. The weather had been good, so the harvest could be considered excellent (taking into account that he did not have a large tract of land either, although if all went well, he could buy a plot next to hers and expand the vineyard), the grape had It had a good quality and had enough wine to mature to produce a quantity close to 10,000 bottles of wine.

Seen from the outside, this adventure was working quite well, and there was a good chance it would improve. However, when the people of the town where he had the house talked to him, he noticed that something was not quite right:

- It is strange - people commented - the business of the vineyard has started quite well, but it does not look happy.

And it was true, he was not entirely happy. It is true that the vineyard filled him, but something was missing, rather someone.

That, someone, was a woman, Susan, who had lived with him for the five years before the vineyard adventure began.

A little over a year ago, when Albert explained the project he had in mind, Susan did not see it clearly: she was a woman from the city, not from the country. He told her that they could live well in the country, that the vineyard would bring many benefits. But it was not money that worried her, she was used to living surrounded by people, with whom she shared her daily experiences, and it was not clear to her that living in the country was going to please him.

It had been a year since they had last seen each other if he had spoken on the phone, plus the first few days, but now they had not spoken for two months. Maybe it was all over now.

So whenever Albert walked to the vineyard at this time in the morning, he was thinking of Susan. But today, he thought that thought was haunting them, because, right on the little path that deviated from the main road and that led to the vineyard he saw a figure that reminded him of Susan.

He thought that she was dreaming, besides, she was still somewhat dark or did not distinguish that figure well. Yet something inside her told him that it was her. Just when he had gotten close enough to recognize her, he heard her say to him:

- Hello Albert, do you mind if I walk with you the rest of the way. - And no, he was not referring to the path that led to the vineyard, he was referring to the entire path that together they started again at that moment.

Albert sighed, now if he had fulfilled his dream.
