The Last Thing I Saw in the Dream

The Eternal Blanket - Dream/Short Story

The Eternal Blanket

A short story of a dream that I had fairly recently. I am currently turning it into a full book.

The dream I had:

Me and wife Shay were on the run from people who had found out that I had done something. Maybe I matched the description of somebody, knew too many secrets, or maybe I had done something terrible and gruesome. Maybe it turns out that I was innocent. - I’m not really sure why they were after us.

Back at it

While running from the men that were after us I forcibly entered a room where there were small children – babies even. Some of them were crying and there was a stack of silky-soft looking blankets in a pile next to a crib.

A man was also in the room. I assume that he was watching over the babies. I tried to reason with the man and let him know that there were men after us. The man tried pushing me back out the door. I then instinctively reacted by taking one of the silk-like blankets and cascaded it over the top of him.

For all we knew, our lives were in danger. I wanted to protect my wife.

I then went to strike the man to knock him out. When the blanket cascaded over the man, he shrank, at an accelerated pace. The man became one of the babies. I was astonished at the site of the man shrinking. I could practically see him reverse-aging through the silky cloth. I then realized that this blanket was a special blanket.

Soon after...

The people that were after us, quickly, busted down the door to the room.

I saw two men run into the room. I persuaded them to halt in their tracks. I stated that I had found something. I then began pointing to the blanket and told them that it could make them immortal. They were curious and I had their attention. They then instructed me to show them, how a measly blanket, would make them immortal. I then towered one of the men with the blanket. To my surprise, the man did not shrink at an accelerated rate. Instead, the man became a dog, with a human-like structure. Covered in fur, with dog-like features. He had a snout but still was able to speak like a man. He became angry with his new features and began snarling at me. Yelling that I would regret what I had done.

I yelled, “wait! It might have just been something to do with who you are as a person.

I convinced the other man to call off his dog and I would grant him immortality with the eternal blanket.

He halted his dog formed partner. And insisted that I continued to throw the blanket over him to see what would happen.

I then tossed the blanket towards the man and watched it gingerly fall over the top of the man’s head.

Again, the man did not shrink. Instead, the man had the same reaction. He became a man with animal-like features. He looked like if a cat were to become human. He kept the size and shape of a man but had the characteristics of a feline.

Both of the men then withdrew a pistol from their holsters and pointed them directly at me.

I raised my hands into the air and began to stammer. I thought the blanket would have done, what it had done to the first man threw the blanket upon. They looked around and had instructed me to keep my hands where they could see them.

The feline man then approached me and instructed me to come with them.

“You’re coming with us”!

I didn’t resist the arrest. I was too much in shock to resist. It was almost as if I had just lied to the men. I didn’t know what to think as they cuffed my hands behind my back.

They led me outside. The cuffs that they had securely cuffed me with, were only held by a pin between the closure of the part that closes around the wrists. They pushed me into the back of a carriage, walked to the front of the carriage, climbed upon the horses and made way to the destination they wanted to take me.

I never found out what had happened to my wife in all of the incidents.

A little way through the trip I managed to break free from the cuffs by forcing the pin out of the securing slot that they had placed on the cuffs. Once I had the pin out, I had moved my hands directly in front of myself and broke free from the other cuff.

I walked to the front of the carriage. I did this to get a running start to bust through the door they made me enter through.

I ran, ducked my head slightly, aiming my should towards the doors. I gave it my all and broke free from the carriage with one try. Once I did, I slammed onto the ground and noticed I was surrounded by a heavily wooded area. I turned my head back to see if the men had noticed me. Luckily, they didn’t and the traveling carriage was still traveling.

I then made a run for the woods. I found a nice thick trunk to hide behind. I decided to not be in the open in case the men had, by now, noticed me go suddenly missing.

That was when I heard a very loud howl. This howl was nearby. So close, that the pitch of the howl was deafening. To the point, where I needed to cover my ears, as I heard it.

My body began to tremble at the sound, once it was heard.

I immediately made a break for the road the carriage had traveled.

The monster had noticed me.

It soon gave chase right behind me.

It stood approximately 12 feet high, on all fours as it gave chase about 7 to 8 feet. With a werewolf-like structure.

I remember the look of the sight. I was running down the dark roadway with the moonlight shining down, the monster closely behind swiping furiously at my body.

When all of a sudden the monster lept up into the air. I saw the shadowy silhouette of the creature as it was diving toward its midnight snack.

That is when...

That is when I woke up.

After I had woke up. I had taken note of my dream as vividly as I could to someday make sense of it all. To this very day, I still do not know the meaning of what the dream had portrayed. Maybe, the dream meant that someday I might become a snack to my own thoughts as they begin to devour my mind.
