#84 🔸 The power of the subconscious in decisions and habits

A thought stayed with me after reflecting on the connection between mind and body: many of our reactions feel spontaneous, yet they have deep roots. Today’s topic follows naturally from that idea. The subconscious guides a larger part of our lives than we admit, and what we call pure willpower or rational choice is often the result of silent processes working behind the scenes.

I’ve noticed in myself that certain choices repeat even when I logically know they aren’t the best. My body sometimes acts before I have time to think, as if it follows an old internal map. This made me wonder: who is really steering the wheel? Me, or a set of unexamined habits and memories?

The subconscious isn’t mysterious in a mystical sense. It’s an archive and response system. Strong emotional experiences, repeated behaviours and early messages absorbed in childhood all settle there. We can’t access them directly, but they influence the way we interpret the world. For example, someone raised in a tense environment will detect signs of danger even in neutral situations. It isn’t intentional, but a form of protection.

This mechanism plays a strong role in relationships. Sometimes we react intensely to a partner’s tone or feel jealousy or mistrust without a clear reason. Often, the subconscious responds to old patterns. You may be in a healthy relationship while an unresolved past connection still triggers emotional alarms.

The subconscious also shapes habits. When a behaviour is repeated long enough, the brain places it on autopilot. This can help or hinder us. If you’ve learned to avoid conflict by yielding quickly, the subconscious will store that as a safe strategy and activate it before you analyse the situation. The same logic applies to positive habits. If you learn to calm yourself through a short walk or deep breathing, the subconscious can turn it into a natural reflex.

I’ve had days when, after hours of tension, I realised my shoulders relaxed on their own. It was a learned response, shaped over time. In other moments, old habits resurfaced with surprising ease. That’s when I understood that the subconscious never disappears. It rewrites itself through consistent practice.

In romantic relationships, the subconscious influences how we perceive closeness and vulnerability. If vulnerability once led to rejection or coldness, the subconscious may respond by shutting down, even when the person beside you is attentive and warm. This explains those mixed moments when you want closeness, yet your body tenses. It’s not a lack of affection but a protective pattern that hasn’t caught up with your present reality.

Working with the subconscious requires patience. An emotion repeated long enough becomes a reaction. A reaction repeated long enough becomes a habit. A habit reinforced long enough becomes part of identity. But identity can evolve. The first step is honest observation. Not rushing to fix, but understanding: where does this reaction come from? Whose voice do I hear when I criticise myself? Is it fear, protection or a learned pattern?

One exercise that helped me is watching for moments when I react “too quickly”. That’s usually where the subconscious operates. The pause between stimulus and response becomes a space of clarity. Even two seconds can shift the inner direction. With time, that space grows and decisions become more deliberate.

The power of the subconscious doesn’t have to be seen as a force that controls us. It can become an ally we train. Change depends not only on motivation, but on repetition, the emotions linked to new behaviours and the patience to understand our inner history.
