Sadly, Hawksbill turtles are on the list of endangered species. Having the chance to see one at the office (Yes my office is somewhere around 12 meters underwater) is great luck. The dive site named Sail Rock in the Gulf of Thailand is a rocky reef more or less in the middle of nowhere with no sandy areas. That's why it is very unlikely to spot a turtle there. They usually like sandy areas and shallower water. This one was the second in nearly 6 years and more than 3000 dives at that site.
Looking at this one in the eyes made me realize that it might have seen much more than me. When not threatened by pollution or loss of habitat they can outlive most humans. It also served as a reminder that this was not my home but theirs. A very humbling experience that highlights the need to protect the oceans.
