Hell on Venus

Hell on Venus

By Benedetto Nicolai | A.Science | 22 Oct 2021

Venus is the second planet in order of distance from our sun and, in addition to this characteristic, it is the planet that presents the geometries (and not only) most similar to the Earth. The diameter of Venus is 12103.6 Km, while that of our planet is slightly higher: 12756 Km. A "Year" on Venus lasts approximately 225 Earth days while a "Day" on this planet has the incredible duration of 116 days and 18 hours would you earth! Until a few decades ago it was thought that Venus was a planet very similar to Earth, which could host water and life forms.

The thought came from the fact that the planet had a distance from the Sun very similar to that of our planet (108 million km against the 150 of the Earth) but its atmosphere prevented from observing the surface directly through telescopes. For this reason, expeditions began in 1961 to further investigate Venus until, around the mid-1970s, after many missions failed due to the frightening pressure of the atmosphere that prevented the probes from landing on the surface. the probes sent the first images of the planet's surface; first in black and white and then in heat.

The images showed an arid environment, with very high temperatures over 400 ° C and an atmosphere full of toxic substances. An uninhabitable world, probably the least candidate planet in the solar system to host extraterrestrial life forms.
