Long time ago during one of my business trip to Singapore I decided to quit smoking cigarettes for many reasons. Decision revealed to be quite hard and I tried to compensate for that missing using an alternative: some cigars! First suggestion coming from friends led me to Coiba and Maduro but soon I started to pursuit Italian products to satisfy my appetite and to preserve my wallet...Along with increasing passion for slow smoking, the opportunity of tasting different Italian cigars brands has become a routine. One of best I’d like to review here is “Toscano Originale 1891”. In 2019 Toscano cigar company celebrated 200 years of success and historically the 1891 is really an important date. Toscano was born in Florence close to Via Santa Caterina and Via delle Ruote, by mistake: a tobacco's lot made only of “Kentucky” brand (if compare to a liquor we like to compare to a “mono-vitigno”) originally produced in America (not in Italy) and largely used  for chewing at that time, was left unattended in a country yard under an intense heavy rain. The whole Kentucky lot of tobacco was flooded and later, in a high humidity environment, heated by summer hot temperature and so it started a complex fermentation process. Fermentation is an awesome alchemical process that transforms rough iron in "gold" for example when we think about bread, wines , distillates and beers: like an artisan who starts to work on a rough material such as paper, leather to create a masterpiece. Tuscan cigar born from that “mistake” as a poor cigar and was sold to modest people in Florence who lived close to Arno river (“Oltrarno”) but slowly evolve into a more complex and refined masterpiece. Until the 1891 Italian tobacco blend didn’t exist at all and Tuscan cigars were made with American Kentucky blend. First Kentucky blend production started in Italy in the 1891 with Toscano Originale , an hand made cigar is a rare exception within Europe: in fact handmade cigars are convenient only in country where manpower cost is negligible for instance Caribbeans , Philippines and South East Asia. Thus, for more than a decade the Italian monopoly stopped Toscano Originale production due to unsustainable costs. Then production has been restarted later in the 80s. Let’s come to the new “Toscano Originale 1891”: it is a very special brand made by an external envelope (fascia) of Kentucky Italian blend, a whole thin rolled leaf (“apicali”) without any defects, smooth and easy to shape by hands. So 1891 can be consider an excellence, a really special version of Toscano Originale with its external envelope made with Italian Kentucky. Packed in a double box, each cigar is enclosed in the usual 7 closing points external plastic bag to preserve its taste. It can be cut in halves (“ammezzato”) for a more convenient smoking time or left intact for a special long smoking occasion. The remarkable spicy aroma is largely appreciated by the most passionate audience.
