Rock 'N Roll's Greatest Cowbell Songs

"I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell," Christopher Walken once said on a now iconic Saturday Night Live skit featuring a fictional depiction of the band Blue Oyster Cult recording "(Don't Fear) The Reaper." Walken now seems to wish he wasn't remembered for that comedy sketch, but rather his more serious acting roles. Regardless, Walken and specifically Will Ferrell's role in that memorable SNL moment propelled the cowbell from subtle backing instrument into the spotlight.

Beyond late night comedy, the cowbell has been a part of popular music for over a century. Before giving Latin music its swing and rock music its memorable accents, the earliest cowbells were made of clay and used by herdsmen in China in the third millennium B.C. to track herds in vast pastures. Metal bells came roughly a thousand years later, also in China, and spread throughout the Fertile Crescent and eventually to the Greeks, Romans, and Celts.

Now, let's get down to it. Here is my list of the greatest rock 'n roll songs to feature the cowbell:

These are some of my favourite tracks that prominently feature the cowbell. They may feed the fever, but you know you gotta have more cowbell! What are some of your favourite songs to feature the cowbell? Drop them in the comments below!
