I had the strangest dream last night. I was meeting with someone in a formal office setting, and we were discussing the proper allocation for a crypto portfolio. It was perhaps the oddest thing ever, as the guy I was talking with was dressed in a suit, as was I. For clarification, I don't even own a pair of proper dress pants let alone an entire suit. We were discussing "blue chip" cryptos such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, though I believe it can be debated as to whether or not ETH belongs in that category, but I digress.
The rest of the details of the dream are pretty hazy, but it did get me to thinking: what would a "proper" crypto portfolio allocation look like? Well, just like with traditional investing, I assume it would depend on three things primarily -- risk tolerance, goals, and time horizon. I'm not a financial advisor but have read lots of material on the matter. I'm no expert, more of a crypto degenerate.
I've spent a lot of time this past year trading Solana-based meme coins aka shitcoins. I've had some big hits and a lot of -100%'ers. I say this because I think that anything I write past here should be taken with a grain of salt. But, I've already give you the "not a financial advisor" rap, so let's continue on this thought experiment.
I'm thinking about a long time horizon, with the simple goal of capital appreciation, and a low to medium risk tolerance. Thinking carefully on the matter, I would allocate as such:
- 75% Bitcoin
- 10% Ethereum
- 5% XRP
- 5% Solana
- 5% Dogecoin
That's it, keeping it simple. Though, I also like this one too:
- 100% Bitcoin
