I remember it well...a Friday night and going to pick up a DVD from a local Redbox kiosk after picking up some carryout food. It wasn't really that long ago, it seems. In 2024, the Redbox parent company Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and converted it into a Chapter 7 liquidation in July of that year. 

I miss the RB kiosk. It was an experience, akin to going to renting a movie from a local video store. I recently discovered one in the wild:

Redbox failed mostly due to the rise in the popularity of streaming services, like Netflix and Hulu. Physical DVDs simply lost their popularity, as the convenience of streaming outweighed the clutter of DVD collections. Redbox's parent company was also $1 billion in debt, which it could not pay. Since they were unable to pay movie studios for new content, the kiosks could no longer be stocked with the latest blockbuster releases. 

Many of these kiosks were simply left abandoned at retailers, who were left with the burden of electrical costs (if the machines weren't shut off) and removal. 

At its peak, there were over 43,000 Redbox locations across the United States and Canada.

Today, there are approximately 20k kiosks still left in the wild...simply abandoned. They are, for the most part, powered down and unstocked.
