In the past week, two major crypto exchanges have announced plans to wind-down operations and close. On July 23, BitMEX announced it would cease operations on September 23, 2026. They join AscendEX, which closed on July 1, as a trio of major centralized crypto exchanges that have decided to conclude their exchange businesses.
Today, BitMart has announced via X that they too have made the "difficult decision" to begin winding down its operations.
Key dates:
• Jul 26, 2026, 01:30 UTC: New registrations, deposits, and new trading orders will begin to be suspended.
• Aug 26, 2026, 01:00 UTC: All trading services will be discontinued.
• Jan 31, 2027, 15:59 UTC: Platform operations will officially cease.
Withdrawal services will remain available. We strongly encourage all users to close positions, complete KYC (if needed), and withdraw assets as early as possible.

Speculation has run rampant in the crypto community as to the reasons why these two major exchanges are shutting down. BitMex served the crypto community for 11 years, and BitMart has been operating for nearly 9 years. BitMart's announcement caused its native token $BMX to drop over 55%.
The fact that three major exchanges have shut down could be attributed to market conditions, as they have cited, or could be part of a major trend. The trend, however, may not be as troubling as it sounds. While depressed crypto prices are partly to blame, these wind-downs don't necessarily indicate a catastrophic end of crypto, but rather a failure of relatively smaller exchanges not being able to stay afloat, while the top-tier fully-regulated outfits like Coinbase and Kraken carry on.
