What happens if Canada becomes the 51st state?
President Donald Trump has posted a number of times, offering a 60% tax reduction for Canadians, an inevitable boost in the economy, and military protection in exchange for becoming the 51st state.
But some Canadians hate this idea, for a variety of reasons:
1) We could cut our own taxes
2)We lose our sovereignty as a nation
3) They just don't like Trump
4) People don't like change in general
5) No more free healthcare
I would advocate that a peaceful American would be very beneficial for Canadians, for many reasons. (these of course are just my opinions and will vary depending on the terms of the potential agreement)
1) A stronger dollar — The Canadian dollar is weaker than it has been in decades, and conversation to USD would not only be a conversation to a stronger currency but the strength of USD would also increase.
2) A sub 100% debt to GDP — Canada’s Dept to GDP is currently over 100%. A US merger would bring this down considerably
3) A promise of lower taxes — lower taxes stimulate economy as people and businesses have more income to invest and spend
4) A better constitution - The Charter of Rights and Freedoms can be altered, since Pierre Trudeau issue the War Measures Act, and that’s messed up, and his son later abuses the act during the Freedon Convoy in Ottawa
5) Lower immigration and less beaurocracy in building — houses are unaffordable currently for many Canadians, and though they’re still expensive in the US, it’s not quite so bad (see Vancouver)
6) No tariffs- self explanatory
7) Better use of natural resources- A larger economy allows for more efficient and environmentally conscious extraction of natural resources
8) A military — Canada’s is frickin tiny
I could go on, with smaller things like abortion laws, the option to have a vacation home in the same country you live in, cutting ties with Britian (God save the Kings still) but tea sucks. You get the point. As a young, entrepreneurial Canadian I would welcome a merger with the land of opportunity, and would love a US citizenship.
