Hello everyone, recently I found out something about a rather interesting topic. As already mentioned in the title of this article, scientists from UC Berkeley have published a new binary star atlas, which lists more than 1.3 Million binary star systems within 3000 light years around the earth. For me as a physics student, this is really exciting, as it gives us more insights and helps our astronomical understanding to grow.
For this Binary Star Atlas they used data from "Gaia" - a space telescope launched by the European Space Agency in late 2013. It is designed to survey the sky for stars and other objects and will help us with our current understanding of the evolution of our home galaxy, the milky way. According to our current astronomical understanding most stars are born as binary stars. A prominent example would be Alpha Centauri, which consists of the stars Alpha Centauri A und Alpha Centauri B. It is very likely that our own sun, was once part of a binary system, as well. In fact, according to the scientists, approximately half of all sun-like stars that were studied, are found to be binary stars. On top of this, many companion stars are almost identical in mass, compared to the other star of the system. This sheds new light on the evolution of stars, particularly yellow dwarfs, as they are what we would call "sun-like".
