Bitcoin Takes Leap Forward with Taproot Upgrade

By Zacharias | RekTimes Archive | 18 Nov 2021

17 November 2021:  This past weekend, Taproot was officially integrated into the Bitcoin network, enabling the ability to utilize smart contracts with actual efficiency. This move will further push Bitcoin in enhancing privacy, security, and scalability. This article will cover the basics of the Taproot upgrade and what it means for Bitcoin's continuing development.

Say Hello to Taproot

The Taproot ugprade is the first major changes to the Bitcoin network in four years. Even better, this upgrade has more or less been widely accepted and encouraged by the Bitcoin community. So what exactly does Taproot do for Bitcoin?

Taproot has actually come in the form of three different upgrades which:

  • Introduces Schnorr signatures
  • Drastically upgrades smart contract capabilities
  • Opens Bitcoin up to the world of DeFi

With the above improvements to the Bitcoin network, this will assist Bitcoin is becoming essentially more privacy-friendly while also lowering transaction fees and improveing scalability - all positives when considering the implications of Bitcoin entering the world of DeFi.

Schnorr Signatures

The introduction of Taproot has mainly provided a substantial ugprade to signatures. Schnorr signatures will help simple transactions blend in and become indistinguishable from complex signatures on the blockchain. Overall, this gives a boost to privacy when transacting in Bitcoin.

To explain -  presently in multisig transactions, each node must process all the signatures and verify each private key within the multisig transaction. This is not only more time consuming but it is more expensive to conduct. With Schnorr signatures, instead of a multisig transaction containing multiple private keys, they are aggregated into one signature that can be read faster and for cheaper.

Smart Contracts

With the introduction of Schnorr signatures along with Taproot, Bitcoin now possesses the ability to utilize smart contracts far more efficiently. With the Lightning Network, Bitcoin transactions cost very little and can be executed almost instantly. Now also integrating Taproot upgrades the entirety of the Bitcoin network, creating the potential for the rise of decentralized application building ontop of Bitcoin - something that made Ethereum famously successful.

Summary

Taproot is arguably the most highly anticipated changes to the Bitcoin network in a very long time. The overall addition of Taproot substantially upgrades Bitcoin's privacy, scalability, and transaction speeds, further assisting the network in catching up in the modern game of smart contract utilization.

Of course, time will tell whether Bitcoin is able to effectively establish a footing in the world of DeFi as it continues to rapidly develop into a complex ecosystem. Nevertheless, the functionality is being introduced and the world's largest cryptocurrency is continuing to evolve.
