Ampleforth explained by Dick’s grandmother (a post for the "#ELI5AMPL Writing Contest and Twitter Giveaway"

This is me and I have a big problem.

I am a writer and blogger. I write sci-fi tales, action novels, film scripts, and other things. I write posts on Publish0x too.

I would like to take part in the contest where I would have to explain Ampleforth to my grandmother.

The problem is that I have no much spare time and, more, my friend Dick wants me to look after his grandmother Susy while he goes out with his girlfriend

He duped me by saying that his grandmother is a great, very great, absolutely the best apple and cream pie cooker. I like apple pie and I also like a cream pie. Yes, I like them very much, very very much.

So now I am here, with Dick’s grandmother peeking on my laptop trying to figure out what I'm trying to write about a possible explanation of Ampleforth to my grandma, with a very big piece of the pie (the biggest one I have ever seen in my life).

  • Hey young man, what are you writing that you seem so absorbed in.
  • Well, it is a bit complicated subject.
  • A complicated subject? Try to explain it to me. Maybe I am able to simplify. Tell it to grandma Susy!
  • Well, Mrs. Susy. It is not so simple. It is a modern crypto finance subject.
  • Crypto? Do you mean Bitcoin and similar things?
  • Yes, Madam, it is a similar thing, but a bit different. It is not about Bitcoin, but about Ampleforth. But … do you know what Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are?
  • Who doesn’t know? Ampleforth, what is complicated about Ampleforth? It is so simple!
  • So simple?
  • Young man! Take another piece of the pie (biggest than the first one) as you seem very angry and listen to me.

  • So, what is Ampl? Simple, very simple. It is a sort of stable cryptocurrency whose value aims to be around the value of the Dollar.
  • But, it is not only a stable coin …
  • Shut up and eat your pie. Here is another piece.

  • It is not an ordinary stable crypto as its value is controlled in a different manner. Imagine having one Ampleforth. Are you listening to me?
  • Yes Madam. Chomp, chomp. Slurp.
  • Don’t make such kind of noise and listen carefully. If you have one Ampl and the crypto market is quiet you should be worth about a dollar in fiat currency. Ok?
  • Slurp!?
  • Is it ok?
  • Ops, yes Madam, I am listening. May I have a glass of water?
  • Eat your pie and listen now. Here’s another piece.

  • Help! It is a monster pie!!!
  • Shut up and follow my reasoning. Consider a moment during which the market is in trouble and the value of your ONE Ampl rises up to 1.3 Dollar. How much Ampl do you have?
  • I have 1 AMPL that is worth 1.3 Dollars! I can make a profit of 0.3 Dollars. May I have a glass of water now?
  • No, eat, and listen. Here’s a bit of cake.

  • But I am full!!!
  • And you didn't understand anything about AMPL!
  • I am full!
  • Shut up, eat, and listen. You can make a profit of 0.3 Dollars if you don’t wait until tomorrow.
  • Until tomorrow? Do you think that there would be a big sell and I will lose my profit, tomorrow?
  • I say that the Ampleforth protocol will make things right.
  • ??Why??How?? Ampleforth protocol?
  • AMPL protocol scans the value of Ampl currency in different whitelisted exchanges. It calculates a mean value. If it detects a deviation from the theoretical value (1 AMPL=1 Dollar), it provides to put things right. If the value is greater the AMPL protocol provides to reduce the amount of Ampl in possession of the owners. If the value is lower it provides to inject currency to inflate the dotations of the owners.
  •
  • I am hungry, may I have a piece of pie.
  • No, listen! If you have 1 Ampl worth 1.3 Dollars and you want to make a profit, you must be quick as the protocol will reduce your endowment of 1 AMPL to 1/1.3 because the protocol aims to the stability of the cryptocurrency. After the protocol correction, you will have only 0.77 AMPL worth 1 Dollar. One Dollar you had and one Dollar you will have, but 1 AMPL worth 1 Dollar you had and 0.77 Ampl worth 1 Dollar you will have. So if you want to make a profit when Ampl value rises up you have to be a Fast Investor, selling your 1 Ampl before the Protocol correct the deviation.
  • Mrs. Susy, I think I understand. I imagine that the protocol will act in the opposite way if the value of the Ampl. Drops down.
  • Yes, it will raise the quantity of Ampl in possession of the owners to establish another equilibrium.
  • Well, Madam, thank you for your explanation and thank you for the very delicious pie.
  • Oh, young boy, you are welcome and come again if you have any doubts about the crypto world. And take another small piece of the pie.
