Some time ago I wrote here on POx about the misfortunes I have with my laptops and highlighted many of the problems I have faced including most dramatically the laptop that I had which was allergic to electricity! It was fine on battery power but as soon as I plugged it in I had anywhere between 20 seconds and 20 minutes before it froze and I was forced to do a hard shutdown. Then I had an HP Pavilion laptop that was killed by one of HP's own updates. I was presented with the Yellow Screen of Death or the White Screen of Death multiple times and have never been able to resolve it. In comparison the blue screen of Death is no problem at all as it just means the computer needs a reboot.

Several months ago I started experiencing power problems with my current Acer Laptop. You may recall I bought an Acer on the basis of a) my bad luck and b) the fact that Mama_Rah has had an unproblematic Acer for nine years, although the screen is beginning to go on it. The only upgrade she has ever had is to replace the older HDD drive with a much faster SSD drive.

However, my Acer has such a spindly pathetic connector for the power supply that it often simply just falls out and recently it has stopped connecting and charging my battery. This is the same problem I had several months ago and I had the power unit replaced. Now with a reoccurence of the same problem it simply means that once more I have to be on the look out for yet another computer. The alternative is to shell out for a repair every few months and I estimate the cost of a new computer will be about the same as six such repairs. So it doesn't make sense to keeping throwing money after a problem that ultimately will not be resolved.

So I am on the lookout for a computer with a robust power supply that is not HP or Acer and that is fit for the job, which to be honest is little more than office functions (I am slightly concerned that my Office 2019 will not carry over to a new computer so will be looking at open office platforms - any recommendations that are non-web based?) and web functions (email, browsing etc). I very rarely have time to play games nowadays and if I do then it tends to be Civilization V.

It is so frustrating because it is actually a sign of poor manufacturing and quality. I remember last time round some research showed that the problem I am experiencing is not uncommon.
