Sometimes I feel like the mythical King Canute fighting the tide. It is fruitless, energy sapping and ultimately a waste of both effort and emotional energy.

So what has got me so riled this time?

You may recall a month or so ago I posted about a female trainer who was died while performing with a captive orca? The video looked a bit off and a couple of minutes of research showed it to be completely fake, even to the extent that the girl herself didn't even exist.

A few days ago Mama_rah - my wife and mother of my children - complained to me that she wanted to read real news and find out what is really happening in the world and thanks to AI and bots it is becoming increasingly difficult to separate the true from the fake. We should, in an ideal world, be able to read and take at face value anything we read, while accepting that some of what is said may carry a lot of subjective bias, particularly in the political arena.

She is of course absolutely right - but sadly it is not the world we inhabit.

What really got me going this week was something that I came across yesterday concerning the horrific murder of Iryna Zarytska that was fully caught in its graphic brutality by the CCTV onboard the light railway. Only extreme adjectives can be used to describe what unfolded and was subsequently released to the world with varying degrees of censorship. The lack of response from other passengers was just as disturbing as the attack itself and indeed it was a full minute until anybody responded and that guy came from elsewhere on the train after seeing drops of blood dripping from the assailant's knife.

In truth she was probably beyond saving and the only mercy - if any - was that the shock dulled the physical pain before she quickly lost consciousness and slumped to the floor. This does not diminish the terror she felt in those last seconds of her life.

But nobody nearby responded and in those 60 seconds she was alone and for the first few of those she was conscious and abandoned by humanity. They just carried on about their business as though absolutely nothing happened. The context doesn't even matter, some have made it about race, some have made it about his mental state... but whatever was going on in his f**ked up head, this was about leaving a fellow human being absolutely desolate in the last seconds of her life.

Despicable!

Now, after what seems to have been a long digression, I will get to my point.

Yesterday, I was browsing my FB when I came across a video that purportedly showed the last moments of Iryna Zarytska's life and having seen too much I immediately recognised it as fake; the two things that stood out were firstly that her facial features were not the same and secondly she remained seated for far longer than she actually did before slumping to the floor.

I ask myself, for what reason do people make such content? What purpose does it serve other than to satisfy some kind of morbid curiosity and there was enough genuine content out there for those who wish to visit the dark recesses of what (in)humanity is capable of. Why generate more content of something already out there.

Whoever you are, just stop sh*tting about with your AI Skills and show some humanity!

I know my voice is like one in the wilderness, maybe my voice isn't alone and just like King Canute facing the tide there is no turning back. My voice won't make any difference but my conscience will not allow me to remain silent.

Yes, I will admit that I looked, once; and this only happened because I had seen the before and after but not seen the attack itself. I wasn't even aware that the full attack was online until Mama_rah told me. I guess I looked because from what I had seen there had been little evidence of the devastating wounds she suffered (at least in part because of her black t-shirt) and I couldn't figure out how she'd died so quickly. Maybe it was wrong of me, but I did ascertain that it was more a case of three short sharp slashes than stabs.

I have shared too much and I have deliberately not shared any images of her, because her best images show a life lost and gone for ever and the worst only serve to show yet again what she endured in her last few seconds of consciousness and it becomes a kind of glorification of tragedy.

I did watch it once, regrettably so as the image is now indelibly fixed in my brain.

And on this sad note my friends I end with my normal salutation to stay safe and well, but with far more heartfelt conviction than usual.
