Can we Trust Cold Wallets?

By rah | rah | 23 Oct 2025

Cold wallets are widely regarded as one of the most secure methods for storing cryptocurrency and especially for long-term holders. Central to their security is that they provide offline storage and store your private keys which keeps it away from online threats like hacking, phishing, and malware. Devices like Ledger, Trezor, and SafePal are designed to operate in isolated environments, meaning even if your computer is compromised, the private keys remain safe. Furthermore, most cold wallets require physical confirmation (e.g., pressing a button) to authorise transactions which adds a layer of human verification. Such devices are built with secure elements and firmware that resist physical tampering.

Even so we still need to be vigilant. If the device or your recovery phrase (seed phrase) is lost, your crypto could be permanently inaccessible. We need to be careful of the providence of our cold wallets. Buying from unofficial sources could result lead to you buying a device that has already been tampered with. Always purchase directly from the manufacturer or authorised resellers. When setting up a cold wallet you have to be particularly diligent in doing it right as mistakes during setup or recovery phrase storage (e.g., writing it down insecurely) can compromise security and lead to a loss of assets. Which would be further exacerbated because, unlike bank accounts, crypto stored in cold wallets isn’t insured.

If lost or stolen, there’s simply no recourse. Your assets are gone forever!

So to conclude always ensure that you buy your cold wallet from reputable sources (e.g., Ledger, Trezor, SafePal, Ellipal) and make sure you store your recovery phrase in a secure, offline location (preferably in a fireproof safe). To add another layer of protection why not consider using a passphrase in addition to your seed phrase?

Finally, never, ever, ever connect your cold wallet to unknown or public computers. That’s just asking for trouble.

Short and to the point today.

As always stay safe and well my friends.
