Today it is Saturday so it is time to share something very different. This is a short section I wrote during some downtime yesterday for a novel I am working on (I am already twice-published through a traditional publisher and have three KDP short stories available).
So here goes.
... and they sat and waited.
Nobody was talking. the magnitude of what they were about to do was weighing heavily on their minds. Each recognised, without saying anything, that going through the plan again or, even worse, any banal conversation would only add to their stress and while they weren't quite terrified it wouldn't take much to tip them over the edge.
In the awkward silence, despite their anxiety and the discomfort offered by the cramped conditions in the car, the THREE of them inevitably drifted off into a restless sleep that left them neither rested nor refreshed.
In the end it was Tom who stirred first. He quickly pressed a side button to illuminate his phone.
2.54.
It's now or never.
He was stiff and his whole body was aching and, so not to disturb the others...
give them a few minutes
... he gently opened the door and stepped out before carefully pushing the door too again but without closing it entirely.
Freed from restraint he arched his back and rotated his neck to work out a kink that'd set in while at the same time shaking his arms out. All the time he was doing this, he was pacing backwards and forwards in part because he was fretting and in part to get some life into his dead legs.
In his mind he was running over the plan again and again as he scrutinised every detail and every contingency he could think of. Worry was setting in and in danger of consuming him. His legs, no longer dead, were very much alive and quaking as a sense of foreboding started to consume his mind.
A sudden click brought him back to the moment as a car door opened.
'Tom you should have woken me'
I hope you enjoyed the reading and feel free to comment.
As always stay safe and well my friends
