“Lieutenant, I gave you specific orders to hunt down the two runners. Where are they?”
“Sir, they entered the forest a decade ago, and no special team force has ever been able to locate them.”
“That’s why I picked Martin and you. You have exactly 24 hours to find the two suckers, dead or alive. I don’t care, find them!”
💎💎💎
“Why the heck did you volunteer for this stupid task? Damn, I swore last time I wouldn’t join you again, and here I am beating myself up for calling you back.”
“Hahaha, come on, Jay. You were totally bored out of your life, admit it. I thought you’d need something exciting to get those juices flowing in your arteries, buddy. It appears I was right.”
“What’s the deal between you and the Colonel? Why did he pick you?”
“Long story, mate. He saved my ass on a special expedition in Cuba, and I owed him.”
“Why did you choose a retired fox like me when you could have teamed up with one of those black op Navy SEALs?”
“No one is as cold-blooded as you, Jay. You know that. You’ve got reptilian blood in your veins, plus you’ve been my wingman in three triathlons. To catch these runners, I needed a fellow runner who understands the quizzes of the mind better than any chess master. You were the only one to qualify for this job.”
💎💎💎
“Up there. Looks like an entrance to a cave. No GPS. No signal. Nothing on the map. How come you guys didn’t spot this with all your satellites and fancy tech?”
“That’s why I chose you, Jay.”
“Let’s tie the ropes and climb. Something tells me the runners have been here.”
💎💎💎
“Looks like ancient tech, mate. The writing resembles the text on the papyrus scrolls we found in Egypt. You’re up, Martin. Geometry is your game.”
“If I place the octahedron in the inverted pyramid and let it spin clockwise, it will ricochet against the multi-dimensional sphere behind the sarcophagus, and we might open something.”
“Man, I thought these things were tied to Egypt. But now they seem to pop up everywhere: Peru, Costa Rica, even Japan. How on Earth did they land inside a cave in the middle of this forest?”
“That’s the point you’re missing, buddy. They’re not from Earth.”
“I get that. Remember, I wasn’t born yesterday.”
“Yeah, you and your reptilian ancestors. Come on smarty pants, help me push this sarcophagus aside. I heard something click underneath it.”
“What’s that green, turquoise-looking goo? Don’t tell me we need to jump inside it?”
💎💎💎
“You’re good?”
“Never been better. Hahahaha.”
Jay and Martin laughed wholeheartedly before getting up in a room packed with luminous mirrors emitting purple smoke.
“Can you hear that sound?”
“Yeah, it’s very subtle.”
“It comes from the lotus-shaped mirror to your right.”
“Look, there they are. The two runners.”
“Yeah, it’s a reflection of them.”
“What are they doing spinning those crystal balls? They haven’t aged a bit, and they have the same clothes on.”
💎💎💎
“Where’s your partner Jay?” said the Lieutenant, mustering Martin from head to toe.
“He didn’t make it.”
“Did you find the runners?
“No, Sir.”
“I’ll see you in my office. I expect a detailed report on Monday. And your badge. Dismissed.”
💎💎💎
Back at home, Martin removed a little piece of glass from his pocket and placed it on the kitchen table. Before sitting down, he poured water into a crystal ball his ex-wife had left in a drawer and sank what looked like a fractal from a mirror into it.
“How’s your new life, Jay?”
“Definitely not boring. Hahahaha”
Martin and Jay laughed wholeheartedly while the magical, mystical sounds of the enigmatic forest kept their conversation alive.
