Quantum Computing using Silicon hits new Fidelity High

Australian University researchers have proven that near error-free quantum computing is possible while built silicon-based quantum devices compatible with current semiconductor manufacturing technology. Let me reframe this statement, as it is important - using existing Silicon based devices being built for other purposes today can lead to progress in Quantum Computing. Instead of highly specialized and thus expensive Quantum equipment,

Why this matters - with error rates so low detection and subsequent correction is now possible. Low error rates,  as in fractions of the last two decimal points of the 99th percentile.  99.95 rate for 1 Qubit, and 99.37 for 2 Qubit operations all of which allow for Quantum error correction protocols to take place.  Additionally, the major milestone for Quantum Computing! And they built a 3 Qubit  system which allows for better scaling in the future.

Quantum Bit Lifecycle - traditionally Quantum bit lifecycle is super short as in microseconds long, the Australian University researchers bit lasted for 35-seconds.  A 'quantum' leap if you will allow the pun!

Rejoice, the data was actually independently confirmed from two other global research facilities - yes the technology is repeatable. I should point out that the same process gate set tomography was only used in 2 out of the 3 cases (still important mile marker if you ask me)

History of Gate Set Tomography (AKA GST) - was developed by a US Lab called Sandia National Laboratories which are located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sandia made the research open for the world to utilize. While the Sandia team worked directly with the UNSW group to develop methods specific for their nuclear spin system. It was reported that the Delft group was able to independently adopt it for their research efforts.

Summary - this evolution might really allow this to be the decade that Quantum computers become mainstream and generally available since they could be deployed using Silicon technology.
