Amazon Joins Race for Quantum Computer With New Caltech Center
The Quantum Computing race is getting down right interesting as Amazon joins the fray with CalTech.
Where - Amazon will position its development at the CalTech Campus (located in Pasadena, CA - well know for its Roses; LOL). The agreements allows Amazon to pay rent for their space and then own any Intellectual Property (IP) they develop.
Why CalTech? First, is their long history in Quantum Computing going back to the early 1980's and the caliber of Quantum lab they already have on campus. Bringing in Amazon allows them to create a Quantum Computing Hub on the West Coast and one direct goal Amazon has announced is they desire to create a computer architecture that builds quantum error correction into the hardware. As you might know Amazon is very heavy in the engineering of their own hardware (AWS doesn't run on IT industry hardware, they make their own chips, own clustering hardware and write tons of software).
Student Access to Amazon Quantum computing will be a win for education physics students. Being on Campus allows Amazon to directly see student needs and fill that need with additional funding. That is exciting!
When - The announcement came on 10/26/21, most of the action will take place in a non-descript building in the NE corner of the CalTech campus...nothing fancy but I look for great things from the team.

It is important to note that this effort will be outside the Amazon AWS Quantum offered via Cloud services! Although, Amazon will streamline any benefits directly to their AWS efforts for certain.
Unknowns - Amazon did not release how large their scientific staff is now or will be in the future. Nor has any budget figure been released for public consumption. Nothing like guarding the keys to the kingdom!
US Competition - IONQ the famous Quantum startup is positioned on the Univ. of Maryland Campus, and don't overlook the Univ. of Chicago and their Quantum tech-startup they have named Duality.
