The patron of 7 May - Blessed Gisela

By ptaku | ptaku | 7 May 2019

7 May The Catholic Church mentions Blessed Gisela.

Gisela was born in 985 in Germany, in the city of Regensburg. Gisela's father was the Prince of Bavaria, Henry the second, and the mother - Gisela of Burgundy.

She was only 10 years old when she was engaged with Stefan, later king of Hungary. The wedding took place a bit later, probably in the year 1000.

In this marriage, four children were probably born, two of whom died shortly after birth. Otto (died before 1010) and Emeryk (died in 1031), who died as a result of wounds sustained during the hunt for wild boars. Together with their father, Stefan, they were canonized.

The chroniclers describe Gisela as an extremely wise co-ruler (along with Saint Stefan), a state, that has just been recovering from paganism.

While Stefan was busy with political affairs, Gisela gave alms and helped the poor. She founded several monasteries and churches, which greatly helped to consolidate Christianity in the land of Hungary.
Unfortunately, after the death of Saint. Stefan in 1038, Gisela was persecuted by the pretenders to the throne who wanted to restore paganism to Hungary. Thanks to her brother's help, she returned to Germany in 1045, where she joined the Benedictine monastery. She died in a monastery in 1060.

Gisela was proclaimed blessed by Pope Paul VI in 1975.
