This story sounds really weird but it’s true and it has something to do with the Illuminati. Illuminati? Are you hooked already? No one would blame you. Actually, most of us do like secret societies, symbols and fringe stories and we always did (like Freemasonry, Knights Templar or Rosicrucianism). The unknown and the kind of mighty power of some shadowy club or group are just fascinating and we encounter conspiracies in a lot of different media. The book series of Dan Brown and the movie adaptions directly address the Illuminati and on YouTube (pls don’t search it^^) you find endless theories of how these guys still rule the world. But there is a real mindboggling story behind this, and it has to do with a very strange religion. But first of all, who were the Illuminati?

They really were a secret society and have been founded by Adam Weishaupt in Bavaria (Germany) in 1776. This group shared the spirit of the Enlightenment-era and wanted the state to be independent from the church ergo a more secular society with believing in science. Actually, their story is pretty lame – they didn’t achieve much, couldn’t really expand and have been dissolved like 8 years after their founding (feel free to check it out yourself but stay to the facts :). So, why are they suitable for the idea of them running the whole world? This is where a very unknown religion named Discordianism comes into play.
Discordianism and Operation Mindf**k
This so-called parody religion was founded around 1963 and is based upon ideas about the mythology of the Greek goddess of strife and discord Eris. In their hierarchy exist Episkopos are leaders who created their own sect of Discordianism, Popes who is just every member of the religion (yes – everyone is a pope^^) and Saints which are real human beings and fictional beings as well. All in all, they seem like a funny mocking religion like the Pastafari. But as you can see it the picture above, they also believe in chaos. This time and the members of the group were fueled with hallucinogens like LSD and mushrooms, which probably was one of the reasons for their believe in operation mindf**k. They thought that through sowing chaos and disbelief humankind can kind of break through their rigid world view and achieve higher levels of consciousness. Therefor they publicly attributed all national calamities, assassinations, or conspiracies to the Bavarian Illuminati. I’m not kidding. And they did this at any time and in any way, shape or form possible. They wrote the Illuminati-trilogy, faked articles and contacted every “alternative thinker” of their time with the Illuminati-theory. As we know of today the plan didn’t work very well^^
The Illuminati are still at the core of endless conspiracies and humankind’s enlightenment might be debatable. I love this story because it shows how little effort is needed to implement some kind of idea and it can just spread like wildfire over time. But here is the fun thing: Discordianism still exists and who knows how many people adapted this ideology in just sowing chaos as much as possible :)
