The internet is a scary place, as well as a beautiful place. You just need to be on one side of it to judge.
If you've ever gotten your wallet hacked or your tokens stolen, it can be a very bad experience.
Knowing fully well that not everyone can afford a Trezor or Ledger to keep their tokens safe, most of us use online (hot) wallets to store our tokens.
These wallets are very convenient, but with that convenience comes the greatest risk of all.
Our money is always connected to the internet. And there are bad people looking for ways to take it from us.
Luckily, there's a solution to that problem, and I'll share that in this post.
1. Always use a VPN
It may seem like a minor detail, but keeping your actual location away from attackers can save you from serious dire consequences.
VPNs do much more than just encrypt your location however. They can also encrypt the data you send and receive, so you're basically invisible online. Which is a good thing.
Free VPN services usually cut corners in some aspects, but I have found one that does the job with...get this. ..NO ADS at all. It's a free VPN for mobile phones, and you can donate as little as $1 to keep the project going.
The name is VPN(just VPN, type it in in your playstore search bar). It's amazing, and although I personally have a tunnelbear subscription, I would use this one anytime too.
2. Be mindful of sites you visit.
If you want to illegally download movies (not that that's a good thing), don't do it with the computer you're storing your crypto on. These sites usually have malware that looks to steal users information. Getting your crypto would just be a side project.
3. Never give away your private keys
Private keys are to be private. It's in the name.
It's essential you don't give away your private keys online, because they are the only way you can get your crypto back in the event that you lose or damage your laptop or mobile phone. Also, backup these keys both on secure software storage options, as well as write them down in many places. You'll thank me later for this.
Lastly, if you can buy a device separately for searching the web, while you have one where you store your crypto, it'd be great. It's not ideal for everyone, but that's one of the major ways to stay safe.
