BitMine, which started out as a Bitcoin mining company, has gone all-in on ETH. In just weeks, they’ve built a position of over 833,000 ETH, worth close to $3 billion, making them the largest publicly traded holder of Ethereum anywhere. That’s not a casual move, it’s a deliberate strategy backed by serious names like ARK Invest, Founders Fund, Pantera Capital, and Bill Miller III.
The logic is straightforward. Ethereum isn’t just a static store of value, it’s a productive asset. It’s the backbone of DeFi, home to billions in stablecoins, and it offers staking rewards that add an income layer you simply don’t get with Bitcoin. For a corporate treasury, that means it can sit on your balance sheet while also working for you.
BitMine’s goal is ambitious, they want to hold as much as 5% of Ethereum’s total supply. Whether they get there or not, the statement alone is enough to turn heads. And they’re not the only ones moving in this direction. Other firms, from gaming companies to blockchain-focused enterprises, have been adding ETH to their balance sheets. Combined, public companies now hold nearly 1 million ETH, worth over $3.5 billion, a big jump from where things stood just months ago.
This has echoes of the early Bitcoin treasury wave, when MicroStrategy’s moves opened the door for dozens of others, but with a key difference. ETH comes with built-in utility and yield potential. For companies thinking long-term, that’s a very different play from simply holding an asset and waiting for price appreciation.
Of course, it’s not without risk. The same volatility that gives ETH its upside can also cut deep, and the regulatory landscape for staking is still taking shape. But the fact that publicly traded companies are willing to step in at this scale says a lot about where confidence is right now.
We’re watching the start of something that could reshape how corporate treasuries think about digital assets. Bitcoin may have been the first to prove a place in the balance sheet, but Ethereum is showing it can play that role, and do more. BitMine just happened to be the first to make that bet loud enough for the whole market to notice.
