On Work and Money

On Work and Money

By band | Prophet of Markets | 28 Mar 2019

If money was no object, what work would you do?

Or would you work at all?

Wouldn't that be something, that we could work freely, all bills paid and more?

That we wouldn't have to be bothered by monthly payments or subscriptions.

That the world won't fall apart just because we don't have to work for a day or more.

That the world wouldn't miss us if we bummed around a bit.

Perhaps that's why we all work so hard right now, cryptos being the thing.

That one day, we can relax a bit.

So we mine the bits first.

And then again, there are some folks who have it all and are still not happy.

When I was in the big city many years ago, a guest came over.

A very rich guest.

He was owner of a shipping firm.

But he had such an unhappy face.

He told my former father-in-law that he was so unhappy.

He had everything and yet he wasn't happy.

In my unenlightened state, I was mulling that over.

How can anyone so rich be so unhappy?

Of course, it being  a private conversation, I let them talk in peace.

But I kept thinking about that man and of what would make him happy.

In my early 20s then, after having had a closeted childhood, I didn't have ideas for him.

Still, he remained in my mind.

What would one do if you had all the money in the world?

How can you be happy?

What would make you live happily?

What would give you a reason for being?

Well, now that I'm older, maybe I'd bombard him with loads of ideas.

And we'd get to work right away.

And we'd laugh our heads off at some of my outrageous ideas.

Too bad I didn't have it then.

Oh boy, the stuff you can do with ALL that money!

Of course, I'd ask him first how his life has been from day one.

And we'd be able to piece the pieces together.

And see what he may have overlooked in his life.

Friends, family, God?

What was missing?

A greater vision?

Something greater than himself?

Was he always with money?

Or was there ever a time he had nothing?

What kind of boss was he?

What kind of father or husband was he?

What kind of friend was he?

How can he be so unhappy with all that wealth in the world?

A shipping firm...gosh...

Perhaps, his soul wanted something from him.

Maybe to be acknowledged.

Or honored.

Or paid attention to.

What do I really know.

But it would be great to encounter this man again.

I hope he's happy now, that he's still around, still as wealthy, or maybe even wealthier, and he has a reason for living.

What about you?

What gets you going each day?

What is your reason for existence?

What are the plans you have?

What makes you happy?

Does your work fulfill you?

Forgive me all these questions.

I myself am answering it within myself.

I'm inventing myself as I go along.

Saves my brain from boredom.

It's always good to reflect at each stage in your life.

Then we can do what the French once said:

"Step back to leap further."
