Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced on Friday, January 10th, that next week she will begin the process to send the Articles of Impeachment of President Trump to the Senate for a trial. Speaker Pelosi has been sitting on the Articles of Impeachment since the Articles were passed on December 18th, 2019, and there has been a half-hearted argument that she was holding out until the Republican controlled Senate agreed to have hearings and witnesses; however, Speaker Pelosi's actions today have shown that to not be the case.
What has happened recently that would have made Speaker Pelosi want to send the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate? Has the Senate agreed to hold an actual trial? No. Did Mueller come in and save the day? No. Did we find the pee-pee tape? Nope. Well Rachel Maddow was wrong. So what happened? Senator Bernie Sanders happened.
The same day as Speaker Pelosi announced the Articles of Impeachment will be sent to the Senate for a trial, an interesting Des Moines Register/CNN poll was released. Senator Bernie Sanders has taken the lead with 20% of the vote, followed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren at 17%, former South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg at 16%, and former Vice President Joe Biden coming in at 15%, and with combining first and second choices, Sen. Warren comes in at 33%, Sen. Sanders at 32%, Pete Buttigieg at 31%, and Joe Biden at 27%.
So, on the same day that a poll was released which showed Sen. Bernie Sanders taking the lead in first choice for the Iowa Caucuses, and Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senator Bernie Sanders are both in the lead with first and second choice candidates combined, Speaker Pelosi chose to give up the fight on getting an actual trial in the Senate on the Articles of Impeachment. Fascinating. Wonder why.
What started the impeachment fiasco? President Trump trying to get dirt on Joe Biden. So Speaker Pelosi didn't care about any of President Trump's crimes like campaign finance violations, violating the Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution, breaking international law by sanctioning medicine and preventing countries from getting needed medication, and a plethora of other crimes, and impeachable offenses, but when President Trump tries to get dirt on Joe Biden, Speaker Pelosi is right there pushing for Articles of Impeachment.
So what does this mean? Well, once the Articles of Impeachment are sent from the House to the Senate, the trial would immediately begin. Sounds reasonable, what could be the issue? Well, every Senator is required to be there for the trial. Who does this affect? Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Elizabeth Warren, it would also hurt Senator Amy Klobuchar, Senator Cory Booker, and Senator Michael Bennet, though we all know they wont get any delegates, being that candidates must receive at least 15% to get any delegates, and the closest is Sen. Klobuchar who is at 6%, less than half of what is needed to get any delegates.
So when Sen. Sanders takes the lead, and Sen. Warren has the advantage, but still a statistical tie, with Biden and Buttigieg, the Articles of Impeachment are going to be sent to the Senate, which will get Sen. Sanders and Sen. Warren off the campaign trail leading up to the Iowa Caucuses on February 3rd.
Hmm, convenient for Joe Biden. The House voted to impeach Trump for wanting dirt on Biden, and now the Articles of Impeachment are being sent to the Senate to take Sen. Sanders and Sen. Warren off the campaign trail leading up to Iowa and New Hampshire. How very convenient for Joe Biden.
